P0202 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions
OBD Code P0202 - Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit Malfunction
A direct impact on the fuel delivery
system can cause immediate loss of power from the engine due to multiple
reasons of malfunction and directly impacting the amount of fuel entering the
engine for combustion. Any mismatch in the fuel to air ratio will directly
result in loss of power form the engine and record P0202 error code in the PCM
after detection of the problem. Check Engine Light is usually the first
indication of this OBD Error code P0202
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0202
This OBD code in a generic trouble
code and applies to all vehicles having OBD-II or vehicles made from 1996 to
present. The specification, troubleshooting and repairs may vary according to
different make and model.
OBD code P0202 is defined as
Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit Malfunction. This error code is set by the PCM/ECM
if it detects low or high voltage drop or resistance in the fuel injector of
cylinder 1. Special transistors, called ‘drivers’ are used by PCM to operate
the fuel injector On and Off in the fuel injection system. If it doesn’t see
the injector voltage close to battery voltage, i.e. high, it will set P0202
error code. Also if the PCM notices that the resistance of higher or lower than
the expected range for the cylinder 1 fuel injector, the OBD code P0202 error
code will set.
What causes the problem of Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit
Malfunction?
- Faulty/damaged Fuel Pump
- Exhaust leaks
- Faulty wiring and connection in
relation to sensor and regulators
- Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty
- Faulty ECM/PCM
- Faulty Fuel Injectors
- Restricted or Clogged Fuel Filters

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0202
Most
common symptoms for OBD code P0202 include a no start condition, extended
cranking before engine starts, hesitation upon acceleration, and decreased fuel
mileage, along with a stored trouble code and malfunction indicator lamp
illumination. Other codes will also likely accompany this type of code
including engine misfire codes, lean and/or rich exhaust codes, and mass
airflow sensor codes.
Common
Symptoms
- Decreased
power and acceleration
- Engine
is stalling or hesitation on acceleration
- Engine dies or is difficult to start
- Affected fuel economy

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0202
Follow the diagnostic steps properly
to resolve the OBD code P0202 error.
- Use quality diagnostic tools like
OBD-II scanner, DVOM, and automobile stethoscope to treat P0202 error code.
- Inspect for the faulty wiring and
connectors that may be damaged, broken or corroded and replace them
immediately.
- PCM used other input signals from
various engine sensors to develop a fuel delivery strategy. As voltage from the
PCM gets increased, the fuel pressure regulator actuator allows pressure from
the fuel pump to build and as voltage from the PCM is decreased, fuel pressure
gets restricted.
- Retest the system after repairs are
completed to ensure that the OBD code doesn’t reappear. If all system wiring,
connectors, and components appear to be in normal working order, connect the
scanner to the diagnostic connector and record all stored codes and freeze
frame data.
- Check for the faults in the fuel
pump, and the fuel injection system for any possible leaks and the thus need
replacement as required. Also check for damaged or clogged fuel filters and
replace them if needed.
- If everything checks out to be ok,
suspect for the problem with the PCM and thus replace or repair accordingly.
Never skip the diagnostic steps and
follow the order provided properly or otherwise can lead to misdiagnosis and
unnecessary repairs and costs, which could have been avoided. Also check for
the following parts for errors or faults;
- Damaged or contaminated spark plug
- Fuel pressure sensor failure
- Exhaust leakages
- Fuel injector failure
- Fuel pump failure
- Internal engine failure
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
software needs to be updated
- The fuel not meeting the
manufacturer's requirements
