P0119 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P0119 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Intermittent
The P0119 fault code can be
described as an engine coolant temperature sensor circuit intermittent
malfunction problem. It is a generic code which indicates that the engine
control module has detected intermittent ECT sensor input.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0119
The
engine coolant temperature sensor is used to detect the engine coolant
temperature. The sensor would modify the voltage signal from the engine control
module. This modified signal would then return to the engine control module as
the engine coolant temperature input. A thermistor is used by the sensor which
is sensitive to the change in the temperature. The electrical resistance of the
thermistor would decrease with an increase in the temperature.
What
causes this problem with the Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Intermittent?
- The
engine coolant level can be low
- There
can be some faults in the thermostat
- Defective ECT sensor
- The wiring of the connectors in the ECT sensor circuit might be opened or shorted
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0119
- Engine Coolant
Temperature Sensor - The P0119 code can also arise due to
some issues in ECT Sensor. So, it is advised to replace them as soon as
possible.
- Engine Wiring
Connector - P0119 code does not really end up
spoiling your PCM, but it might also
accompany few Engine Wiring Connector issues. We have best Engine Wiring
Connector related parts with us.
- Powertrain
Control Module - A broken Powertrain Control Module
can cause a lot of issues. It would be nice if you get it replaced on time.
- Engine Control
Module - Defective Engine Control Module can
be a major reason why P0119 code depicts. So, make sure to replace it online so
that you don’t have to face any further issues.
- Air Fuel Ratio - Everything is okay with the timing chain and still OBD code
P0119 triggering? Then there must be some defects in Air Fuel Ratio. Replace
them as soon as possible.
- Fuel System - Do you
remember when was the last time you got your car Fuel System checked up? A
damaged Fuel System can cause a lot of issues like displaying P0119 code.
Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0119
It is
very important to know the symptoms of an issue as only then you would be able
to solve the problem. So that’s why we have listed out some major symptoms of
OBD Code P0119 here:
Common Symptoms
- The
engine control module can start turning on check engine light and would go into the failsafe mode, substituting
input to 176 deg F
- The
engine may start facing a hard start when the engine is cold, and will start
normally when warm
- The
engine can start running roughly and hesitate until the engine warms up
- The
engine should run close to normal once the engine warms up
- If
the ECT input is intermittent, then the ECM would start going in and out of
failsafe mode, this would cause the engine to run erratically
How To Correct P0119 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent
- The
other ECT sensor codes should be first tested and replaced
- The
ECT connector should be repaired or replaced
- You
must repair or replace an open wire or short as needed
- The
ECT should be replaced with a new sensor
- You
can always replace the ECM if shorted out

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0119
- You can
visually check to see if coolant is full, and that the system as well as
thermostat are working correctly
- Then
you can scan and document the codes that are received and view the freeze frame
data to see when the code was set
- The
OBD-II fault codes should be cleared and then you should retest the vehicle to
see if the code comes back
- Carefully
observe the sensor’s live data on the scanner to ensure that the temperature
output is within specifications while wiggling the sensor connector and wiring
- Once
you find out that no problems are actually noted, then the next step for the
technician is to disconnect and check the sensor and connector for problems
like corrosion or loose connections. Replace the corroded sensors and
connectors
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0119 Code
- The
most common mistake is to not perform a visual inspection first
- Make
sure that you perform tests on codes P0117 or P0118 first
- The ECT sensor should not be replaced unless tests indicate a problem
- Not connecting the new ECT sensor can turn out to be a big mistake and viewing the ECM data to see if the temperature output from the sensor is close to the same as ambient temperature before installation
