The ignition coil is the part of the mechanism of the engine which helps in ignition. It is also known as a spark coil, and is essentially an induction coil. Its job is to transform the battery's low voltage into the thousands of Volta actually needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs. This then helps by the spark plugs to ignite the fire. In short, this can lead to problems with your vehicle being stopped and started.

The ignition coils, also known as the spark coils, are an induction coil in an automobile's ignition system which is responsible for converting the battery's low voltage into the thousands of volts needed to produce an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fire.
How ignition coil works?
It can be explained how the ignition coils operate as follows: Whenever you turn on your vehicle's ignition switch, the current passes through the primary winding which is responsible for generating a magnetic field in and around the iron heart. The primary current collapses, as the touch breaker breaks in contact. This, too, breaks down the core magnetic field. This sudden breakage of the magnetic field causes very high voltage through the secondary winding. The voltage produced is roughly 50000 Volts. Now, to provide spark for ignition this high voltage flows through the ignition distributor to the spark plug.
Where is ignition coil located?
It that come as a surprise to you that not all cars are fitted with ignition coils, but those that do all have them in the same place, i.e. next to the spark plugs on the engine's right side.
