Chevrolet Equinox Double Platinum Plug
About Double Platinum Plug
A single platinum plug resembles a copper spark plug with the middle electrode sold to a platinum disc. A double platinum spark plug has a platinum disc on both the main and the side electrodes. This form of the plug is a price increase, which usually gives a small amount of higher output along with the lifetime of platinum connectors. Another benefit is that the double-platinum plugs work particularly well with wasted spark ignition systems. Double platinum spark plugs are more costly, as platinum is a rarer element in nature. Their great lifespan is where platinum spark plugs shine in normal driving conditions. Platinum is tougher than nickel alloy and is no less eroded than copper / nickel plugs. This ensures that the gap does not spread at the spark plug tip as the metal starts wearing off. It is necessary to have the spark gap as described in the application for the specific engine. Gauges can be used to make this adjustment by bending the ground electrode if necessary. The risk of misfiring increases if the gap in the plug is too large. The spark will not be big enough if the breakage is too small. Electrode erosion gap growth can be tackled. Double platinum spark plugs are more efficient than copper/nickel in preventing the accumulation of carbon because they operate at higher operational tempers. They are suitable for modern motors fitted with distributor based electronic ignition systems and normal OEM systems for many new cars.
What is the purpose of Double Platinum Plug?
Double platinum spark plugs are more effective in avoiding carbon buildup as they operate at higher operating temperatures than those of copper / nickel. Platinum is stronger than nickel alloy, so the way copper / nickel plugs do not erode. That ensures the gap at the spark plug tip does not expand as the metal wears away.
How Double Platinum Plug Works?
Electrical current travels from the battery to the induction coil, which increases the voltage required to ignite the plugs. Spark plugs are needed to make a smooth burn. Each spark plug has an ignition system connected. When the coil is generating high voltage, electrical impulses travel through insulated plug wires from the ignition coil. Spark plugs require voltage from a lower voltage battery that exceeds 20,000 Volts. Once the voltage exceeds the dielectric strength of the gases, a spark springs the gap at the firing end of the plug and the mixture of air and fuel is ignited.
Where is Double Platinum Plug Located?
The spark plugs are mounted on the cylinder head of the engine.
