Catalytic Converter handles the exhaust gases emissions which get produced in an engine's combustion chamber at the time of burning of the fuel. Catalytic converters help reduce the harmful emissions and improve the quality of the gases expelled from the exhaust system so that the least amount of harm in caused to the environment.
How Catalytic Converter Works?
A catalytic converter is a tool that uses a catalyst to transform into a chemical method the harmful and poisonous gases that come out of the exhaust system. Catalytic converter is made of platinum and palladium with a honeycomb structure enclosed in a shell of metal and connected to the exhaust pipe. Catalytic converter key function is to transform the carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water, as well as converting nitrogen oxide (NOx) back into nitrogen and oxygen. The primary stage is the reduction catalyst, in which platinum and rhodium help to reduce NOx emissions. The second stage is called the oxidation catalyst, it removes unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide at this stage by burning them over a platinum and palladium catalyst, and the final stage is the conversion is a control device that can track the exhaust system output.
Where is Catalytic Converter Located?
In the exhaust system, catalytic converters are located after the exhaust manifold and before the silencer or muffler.
