About Automatic Transmission Parts

The automatic transmission is also known by many names like AT, auto transmission, self-shifting transmission, or n-shift transmission (‘n’ is the number of gear ratios). As these names suggest, the automatic transmission enables the vehicle to change gears automatically on acceleration and deceleration without the hassle of manual shifting. It handles the engine’s internal combustion system efficiently and manages the speed, torque, and power to provide varied outputs, without hesitation or jerks. The hydraulic automatic transmission is the most common one found in automobiles today. A fluid coupling is used in place of a friction clutch, which changes gears by locking and unlocking the planetary gears hydraulically. The automatic transmission has a set of gears with parking gear locking the output shaft to keep the vehicle from rolling. For vehicles with limited speed like a forklift or lawnmower, a simple torque converter is used to transfer the energy from the engine to the wheels. Several systems are used in automatic cars other than the hydraulic automatic transmission system, such as Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) and the Semi-Automatic Transmissions. These systems use the transmission control unit to predict the gear changes rather than requiring the driver to shift gears manually. The traditional automatic transmissions differ from a CVT and Semi-Automatic transmission system in their operation. The CVT makes use of a belt or torque transmission to allow an infinite number of automatic transmission gears rather than finite gear ratios in the transmission. In the semi-automatic transmission, the clutch is present like in the manual transmission but is controlled by electrohydraulic methods. Cars also come with manual shifting like paddle shifting in some models, whether automatic, semi-automatic or CVTs.

An automatic transmission system uses a variety of moving parts for its operation. It comprises various mechanical components, fluids, and electrical parts that work together in complete coordination to deliver a smooth ride with no jerks while shifting. The power is transmitted from the engine to the torque converter pump. The power from the pump goes is supplied to the converter turbine with the help of the transmission fluid. The stator in the converter multiplies the power in the transmission fluid, allowing the pump to send more power to the turbine. This results in a vortex power rotation in the converter. The turbine is connected to the transmission by a central shaft. The rotating shaft supplies power to the gears of the transmission case. The automatic transmission uses clutch discs and brake bands to move the gears. Depending on the moving parts, the gear system decides the gear ratios and decides the amount of power needed from transmission for the drivetrain. That is basically how an automatic transmission system works. There are various sensors and control modules to support all the physical functions of the system.
