P2556 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions
OBD Code P2556 - Engine Coolant Level Sensor/Switch Circuit
Stressed?
Can’t solve the error code P2556? Parts Avatar has a solution for you! We have
written down here all that you need to know about the error code P2556. In
order to determine how rich or lean the ratio of fuel and air is in the
cylinders, the oxygen (O2) sensors installed in the car measure the oxygen in
the exhaust. It should be noted that evaluating this mixture signifies a better
fuel economy and lesser exhaust emissions.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P2556
The
engine control module installed performs the function of regulating the engine
coolant level sensor/switch signal. Whenever the engine coolant level
sensor/switch signal fails to fall out of the manufacturer’ specifications, the
powertrain control module sets the OBD-II error code P2556.
What
causes this problem with Engine Coolant Level Sensor/Switch Circuit?
- A
malfunctioning engine coolant level sensor
- The
harness in the engine coolant level sensor/ switch loose or short circuited
- A
bad electrical connection running in the engine coolant level sensor/switch
circuit

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2556
If
you want to easily diagnose this fault code, then all you have to do is to
follow the steps which are mentioned below:
The
PCM gets the data through the engine coolant level sensor (usually a two or
three-wire variable resistance sensor) found in the engine coolant system. This
sensor has a voltage wire (typically with a 5-volt reference signal) and a
ground wire. In order to control the engine temperature, the PCM makes use of
the reference voltage wire. The sensor employs a float on a mechanical arm, as
the float acts to make variations in the coolant level (generally inside of the
coolant reservoir). The float is elevated or lowered affecting the mechanical
arm which regulates the system of the electronic contacts that differ on the
basis of resistance. The coolant level tends to increase with a decrease in the
resistance. This further leads to an increase in the signal voltage input
signal transmitted to the PCM. As the resistance increases, the coolant level
falls, thereby initiating a fall in the input signal voltage to the PCM. A code
is stored and a service engine soon lamp illuminates, when if the input signal
voltage from the engine coolant level sensor decreases below a certain degree
(or peaks above it). A thorough diagnosis of the engine cooling system should
be performed before even performing any repairs (if the vehicle exhibits signs
like an overheated engine). Well, in almost all cases, the diagnosis should
include a proactive chemical block test. To perform this test, one might need
special application device to capture steam from the engine cooling system
where a chemical agent reacts to any hydrocarbons found there.
By
performing such a test for hydrocarbons in the engine cooling system, the
mechanic can ensure that a replacement of parts like as the thermostat, water
pump, coolant hoses, heater core, or radiator will correctly repair the
overheating condition by ruling out block and cylinder head (or cylinder head
gasket) error. Now that the chances of a malfunctioning engine block or
cylinder head have been deleted, the correction of the problem can be as simple
as using a cooling system pressure tester to locate a coolant leak, and then
mending it. If in case, you fail to find any coolant leaks, a defective
thermostat, cooling fan, or radiator (circulation) should be suspected. A
malfunctioning engine temperature sensor should be blamed, if in case, the
engine appears to be functioning in order and doesn't appear to be overheating.
Use a scanner or code reader and a digital volt ohmmeter, and access to a
manufacturer's wiring schematic if you want to diagnose this code.
Common Mistakes When
Diagnosing the P2556 Code
Here
we have listed a few common mistakes that should be avoided while diagnosing
the error code P2556:
It
should be noted that the mechanic should follow all the repair steps in order
to avoid missing any steps. As it can lead to misdiagnoses and expensive after
repairs also. If there are other trouble codes stored, all of them should be
treated in order.
