The powertrain control module consists of the transmission control module which further inhibits the diesel engine power monitor (DEPM) strategy in it. The DEPM performs the task of regulating the engine RPM in the absence of demand of power from the accelerator pedal position sensor (APP).

It should be noted that the DEPM RPM value should always be recorded higher than the engine RPM, under usual engine idle operations. Whenever the engine RPM fails to surpass the DEPM limit, the DEPM deactivates the crankshaft and the camshaft output signal sent to the powertrain control module and the fuel injector control module (FICM).
