P2434 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions
OBD Code P2434 - Secondary Air Injection System Air Flow/Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 1
Are you looking for the common symptoms, diagnostic procedure, and
causes of the P2434 error? Then you are at the right place. Faulty PCM is
usually known as the secondary air injection system air flow/pressure sensor
circuit. Intermittent/erratic bank 1. During the cold start of the engine,
fresh air from the outside is sent by the secondary air injection system into
the exhaust system. This extra air burns the exhaust emission that is highly
rich which is produced as the engine warms up. To check the functionality of
the AIR system, PCM will use an AIR pressure sensor. If an unlikely signal is
sent by the AIR pressure sensor, the P2434 error will get stored. The pressure
sensor is considered as a part of the AIR control solenoid in some vehicles.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P2434
During a cold startup,
the secondary air injection (AIR) system helps to reduce the hydrocarbon
exhaust emission. This takes place when the start-up engine coolant temperature
lies between 50°C (41-122°F), and the intake air temperature (IAT) falls
between 5-60°C (41-140°F). The AIR pump functions 5-60 seconds after the engine
starts up.
The PCM initiates the AIR system by instantaneously giving grounds to the AIR pump and AIR valve relays. The internal contact of the relay is closed by this action. Both the AIR pump and the AIR control solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly are tuned up, the pump runs and the control/shut-off valve is opened.
Through the open control/shut-off valve, fresh air is pumped into the pipes/hose and exhaust manifold by the AIR pump. The catalyst operation is initiated by the extra air which helps to reach the operating temperature very quickly. For a short duration, the AIR pump stays on after the control/shut-off valve is ordered OFF. The AIR pump will not run or start when it is commanded OFF unless the next vehicle starts. If the AIR system is stopped, the closed AIR control/shut-off valve will avoid air/exhaust flow in both directions.
The pressure at the AIR control solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly inlet is monitored by the AIR system pressure sensor during the commanded ON/OFF states
What causes this problem with the Secondary Air Injection System Air Flow/Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 1?
- The secondary air injection pump might be malfunctioning.
- Failure of the one-way check valve.
- Malfunctioning of the air control solenoid valve.
- Air pressure sensor might be broken.
- The electrical wires might turn out to be malfunctioning.
- The connectors might be loose or eroded.
- PCM might be faulty.
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P2434
- Powertrain Control Module - If you find the check engine light on the
display dashboard, then the PCM is faulty. Replace it as soon as possible to
avoid the P2434 error.
- Engine Control Module - Does your car jump start on reverse polarity? It
is an indication of damaged ECM. Repair / replace it soon to avoid P2434 error.
- Secondary Air Injection Pump - Increased emission
values during cold start of the vehicle can cause the malfunctioning of the
secondary air injection pump. Replace it quickly.
- Air Pressure Sensor - Does your engine stall
very often? Then the air pressure sensor can be damaged. Replace it with a new
air pressure sensor from PartsAvatar.
- Air Control Solenoid Valve - Does your engine stall
very often? Then the air control solenoid valve can be faulty. Avoid the P2434
error by replacing it as soon as possible.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2434
It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P2434 code to be stored:
- Start with the help of a troubleshooting procedure, and check for
the correct Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) specifically designed for your
vehicle by year, model and transmission.
- You can save enough time in the long run as it guides you in the
right path.
- The circuit will include several parts like the secondary air
injection pump, check valve, pressure sensor, air control valve, and the PCM
depending on the particular vehicle.
- Now, perform a visual inspection of the wires for injuries like
scraping, rubbing, or burn spots.
- Check for the connector as well as its connection if they are
properly secured and if there is any corrosion or damaged pins.
- You may also have to visually examine the connectors and its
associated connections for protection, erosion and damaged pins.
- In this process, you must inspect all the wires and its
connections to components which also contains the PCM.
- Validate the configuration of the circuit by verifying the
particular tech data and make sure that every part is included in the circuit
which may also contain the fuse or a fuse-able link in some applications.
- Make sure that the airflow is in one direction only by checking
the check valve.
- Presence of ice during extremely cold weather in the secondary air injection pump is a sign that the one-way check valve is broken where the condensation from the exhaust will go into the pump.
Advanced Steps
- The advanced procedure varies for every vehicle as they are
specific and need proper diagnostic tools to carry out the diagnosis.
- Use a digital multimeter and appropriate technical references for
your vehicle to start the process.
Voltage checks
- Depending on the vehicle and the configuration of the circuit, the
permitted range and reference voltage will vary.
- The correct order and troubleshooting charts are included in the
specific technical data to help in the proper diagnosis.
- If there is no power source and ground during the process, the
continuity test must be done to verify the reliability of the wires,
connectors, and other components.
- Whenever the continuity test is done, the normal readings for
wires and connectors should be set to 0 ohms resistance and the power must be
detached from the circuit.
- Wires which are open, shorted or corroded is an indication for no resistance or continuity and it must be quickly fixed.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P2434 Code
- Failure of the air control solenoid.
- Defective PCM.
- Faulty air system pressure sensor.
- An issue with electrical wires.
