OBD Code P2142 - EGR Throttle Position Control Circuit 'A' High
So,
you just found out that there’s an OBD code flashing because of which the check
engine light was on? Well, don’t worry the P2142 code is set by the PCM when it
detects an issue with the intake throttle actuator. Read along to know more
about the code, the different components involved and most importantly how to
get rid of it.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P2142
The
P2142 code is defined as an issue with the EGR system, but it actually refers
to an electrical problem with the intake throttle actuator. This is what opens
and closes the throttle plate in your electronic throttle body vehicle. The
Powertrain Control Module is responsible for informing the EGR throttle control
valve where to position itself as per the driver’s requirement. If the inputs
regarding voltage signals from the EGR throttle control valve aren’t as needed
by the PCM it will proceed to set the P2142 code.
What causes this
problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Throttle Control Circuit 'A' High?
- Signal
circuit to the EGR throttle control valve is shorted
- EGR
throttle control valve shows electrical problem within the circuit
- Fault
with the EGR throttle valve
- Failure
of the PCM

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2142
You
can resolve the P2142 error code by following these diagnostic steps:
To
begin with, get hold of all the instruments needed for successful diagnosis of
this code, these will be; an OBD scanner, digital volt/ohmmeter, and an
oscilloscope. In terms of information guides, you will need the service manual
or the Technical Service Bulletin of your specific vehicle.
Now
that you have everything handy, start by performing a visual inspection of the
EGR valve control wiring and connectors, any damages noticed will have to be
repaired or replaced. There are usually 3 or 4 wires at this control valve, so
be careful and check all of them. If you’re unsure of their location, make use
of of your vehicles Technical Service bulletin. There will be plenty diagrams
and charts which you can use to get the exact location. Now continue your
diagnosis by disconnecting the harness which is going up to the EGR throttle
control valve and using the DVOM test the signal circuit. If you find that
there’s no 5 volts signal to the valve or 12 volts repair the wiring coming
from the PCM to the valve. There’ may also be an issue with the PCM.
If
there are no issues there the next step would be to check if you have a good
ground at the EGR throttle control valve. For this you will have to connect a
test light to a 12V battery positive/red terminal and connect the other end to
the ground circuit going towards the EGR throttle control valve circuit ground.
Light not lighting up is a sign of circuit problem, if the test light does
light up, carefully wiggle the harness going to the EGR throttle control valve
and note if the light flickers. If it does, then there’s an intermittent
connection. Accordingly perform repairs or replacements and clear the codes to
see if it resets upon test driving.
You
also refer your vehicles Technical Service bulletins for the tests to be
conducted for diagnosis and repair or replace the EGR control valve
accordingly. If there’s no issue found with it, chances are the problem is with
the ECM. Replacing the ECM required reprogramming, so make sure you take help
from a professional for this.
