P2029 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P2029 - Fuel Fired Heater Disabled
This is a generic OBD code, so don’t panic when
you discover it. These OBD codes are set to tell you that there’s some issue
that needs your attention. The P2029 code is set by Powertrain Control Module
(PCM) of your vehicle. It sets the code when it picks up a malfunction in the
auxiliary or fuel fired heater system. This kind of an issue will result in the
deactivation of the heater system. You can resolve this code by following the
diagnostic steps we mention in this article along with other useful information
about this OBD-II code.

The coolant temperature
sensors of your vehicle are used to determine the heater temperature. It’s the
task of the PCM to be monitoring these temperature sensors so that the fuel
fired heater is working as needed. When the PCM is unable to detect the correct
temperature differential between the coolant entering the fuel fired heater and
the coolant that’s leaving the heater, it will set the P2029 code. The check
engine light that you’re noticing will also be illuminated after this. In
certain vehicle it takes few failed ignition cycles for the MIL (Malfunction
Indicator Light) to be illuminated.
What causes this problem
with the Fuel Fired Heater Disabled?
- Defect in the temperature sensor (air or coolant)
- Poor fuel fired heater injector
- Malfunction of the fuel fired heater burner/igniter
- The wiring of the fuel fired heater circuit is shorted or open
- Damaged connectors
- Improper PCM

Diagnosing Of Engine Error OBD Code P2029
It is essential to
diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow
for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P2029 code to be stored:
- Start by getting all the tools required for the diagnosis, you will need a diagnostic scanner, digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and a source of vehicle specific diagnostic information. Using the vehicle information source you can get the Technical Service Bulletin and match the code to the symptoms exhibited by your vehicle. Make sure you match your vehicle's make, model, engine correctly with the TSB. The TSB can be a great source of information for locating various components and parts through the diagnosis procedure.
- Now connect the scanner to the diagnostic port of your vehicle and retrive all the codes present and freeze frame the data. Make a note of it too, these will help you understand if there’s an intermittent condition present as well. Once you have done that you can proceed to clearing the codes and taking your vehicle for a test drive. If the PCM enters readiness mode then you’re likely having an intermittent condition, these unfortunately need to worsen to be able to accurately diagnose them. If the code rests you can continue your diagnosis.
- Look through your vehicles information source for diagnostic flow-charts, connect face views, component locations, connector pinout charts and all the procedures for the tests needed. If you find that the fuel fired heater is disabled, you will need to clear the code prior to testing. Using the DVOM test the temperature sensors and see if they’re as per the specifications of the manufacturer. Those sensors that aren’t within the maximum permissible parameters will have to be concluded as defective. Using the same vehicle information source and the DVOM test the fuel fired heater injectors and igniters. Ensure you do this with the system activated, if you’re unable to do so due to climatic reasons you will have to use the scanner to manually activate.
- Upon diagnosis if you find that the other components are functional while the system switches you will have to use the DVOM to test the input and output signal circuits from the fuse panel, ignition switch and PCM. Remember to disconnect all the controllers before using the DVOM for the test.
Common Mistakes When
Diagnosing the P2029 code
- Not following the diagnostic steps in order
- Overlooking fault with the electrical system and connectors and
not repairing them
- Following the wrong TSB
