Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0906
Here are
some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
- A digital volt-ohm meter would be required to diagnose the GSP sensor as well as the circuit between it and the ECM or TCM. A scan tool with live data streaming capabilities may also be needed in diagnosis, as it would help in showing you what the ECM or TCM is seeing.
- Generally circuit issues like loose connections, corrosion, or defective wire harness cause this DTC to be stored, this problem can be caused because of alignment issues.
- First of all you should inspect the alignment of the sensor. The scan tool can be used for this step. You can always adjust it as per the requirement.
- Rotation sensors usually need to be aligned to a “neutral baseline” to properly detect gate select position. If it is off to one side or another, GSP voltages may be skewed to one side or the TCM may detect more than one position at a time.
- Be sure the sensor mounting screws are properly torqued to stop motion of the sensor case.
- The GSP sensors which are located on the shift lever or shift linkage may rely on physical contact, tabs or buttons forming the basis for these sensors or switches. With the passage of time, plastic or metal tabs may become fragile, crook, or smash.
- At least a couple of brands use magnetic micro-switches to sense position, and the magnets have been known to come loose. Make sure to restore the defective parts.
- The next step is to check the circuits.
- For that you will require an electrical wiring diagram, specific to your year, make, and model, to diagnose the circuit running between the ECM and GSP.
- Carefully examine the GSP sensor, connector, wire harness, and ECM or TCM connector for obvious defects.
- Monitor the connectors for corrosion or evidence of water entry, faulty or loose pins. All the connectors should be seated properly. Fix them as per the requirement.
- The ECM and GSP should be disconnected and then the continuity should be checked.
- If they measure more than 5 Ω, then the wire harness should be repaired. If they measure less than 5 Ω, suspect a defective GSP sensor, but do not condemn it until the circuit inspection is finished.
- You should inspect for short circuits between each line and from each line to ground. If you measure less than 10 kΩ resistance, then mend the wire harness.
- If you measure more than 10 kΩ, then the faulty GSP sensor should be suspected.
