The P0819 OBD code relates to the automatic transmission and the up and down shift function of it. This is also referred to as the ‘manual mode’, this arises in vehicles that support both automatic as well as manual transmission systems.

Learn More about OBD Error Code P0819

This is a generic OBD-II code relating to the voltage/resistance issues with the transmissions manual function or the up and down shift switch. The Powertrain control module which is the engine computer, and if it detects a voltage or resistance from the transmission range correlation circuit (includes the switch, connectors, wiring and mode actuator), it will set this code. Upon setting the P0819 code, the check engine light may also get illuminated. Some vehicles depending on the make and model may experience disabled manual shifting functions of the transmission by the Powertrain control module.

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0819

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0819 code to be stored:

  • Start off by procuring all the tools and information you will need so that you your diagnosis can go smoothly. You will need a diagnostic scanner, a DVOM or digital volt/ohm meter and a reliable source of vehicle information. In this vehicle information source, match your vehicle's make and model, engine and year of manufacturer to find the right technical service bulletin for the error you are facing. Match the symptoms, engine size as well as the exact code or codes and keep this ready for reference.
  • Now connect your scanner to the vehicle diagnostic port and retrieve all the codes stored and freeze frame the data, make a note of all the information in the order in which they have been stored and clear the codes. Take your vehicle on a test drive to see if the PCM enters readiness mode and the code doesn’t reset, or if the code resets immediately. If the former happens, then know that it’s an intermittent code and may be difficult to diagnose, in such scenarios the problem may have to worsen before correct diagnosis can be made. In the case of latter, where code immediately reset, you will have to search the TSB for diagnostic flow-charts, connector pinout charts, connector face views and procedures/specifications of components tests.
  • Start off by testing the voltage, ground and the signal output via the DVOM at the upshift/downshift as well as transmission range switch. The upshift/downshift switch circuits typically will consist of a battery voltage (when activated) or a ground (when deactivated). Test the switches using the same DVOM and match it to the manufacturer's specifications mentioned in the diagnostic information source for your vehicle. Repair or replace them as needed.
  • Upon further investigations if you have found that the circuits of the system are working fine, then use the DVOM and test the upshift/downshift switch as well as the transmission range switch circuits that go up to the PCM module or transmission. In order to do so, first disconnect all the controllers and start using the DVOM for testing. The upshift/downshift to transmission range switch correlation codes that are set most commonly are due to switch failure.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0819

  • Overlooking the condition of the connectors
  • Not checking the electrical connectors for damages caused due to spilled liquid and instead suspecting an issue with the switch
