P0818 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P0818 - Driveline Disconnect Switch Input Circuit
The
P0818 trouble code is set by the Powertrain Control Module of the vehicle. This
is a generic OBD-II code which is concerned with voltage problem. In a
four-wheel drive when there’s a problem with its transfer case neutral position
switch due to voltage issues this code is set. The PCM detects this by the
signal it receives from the switch indicating that the transfer case is in
neutral whereas the vehicle in actually in high range or is moving. This
malfunction detected by the PCM will be indicative of an issue with the switch
itself and result in P0818 code to be set.

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0818
Here
are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
The
first thing to do is to the clear the code and resets the Powertrain Control
Module. Next, it’s time to see if the transfer case is in normal position or
not. You will have to then take the vehicle for a test drive and see if the
P0818 code is re-set. If you notice that it has not and the PCM enters
readiness mode, you may have an intermittent condition, and in most situations
the problem has to worsen to be able to diagnose it correctly.
However,
if the code returns, you have to shift your focus to the switch connector and
the wiring harness. Test them both using the Digital volt/Ohm meter or DVOM for
resistance. See if the readings match with those specified by the manufacturer
for your specific vehicles make and model. Be sure to match your vehicle
accurately with the code in the Technical Service Bulletins. If you notice that
they aren’t fitting in the manufacturers prescribes range then they will have
to be replaced. However, if you find that they are within the range, then most
likely the problem is with the neutral position switch itself, you will then
have to test it for resistance and repair or replace as needed depending on the
extent of damages.
The
P0818 code can also be caused by a bad ground or connector present between the
Powertrain Control Module and the transfer case wiring harness, even though
this is very rare. You can rule this out only after you have confirmed that
both the neutral position switch as well as the wiring harness are both in good
working condition and do not require any mechanical attention whatsoever.
