Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0811

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0811 code to be stored:

The first step is to ensure that your vehicle's clutch, pressure plate and throughout bearing are all functioning correctly. If needed, you may have to also inspect the clutch arms, bushings and the clutch hydraulics too.

Now procure a diagnostic scanner, a DVOM (digital volt/ohmmeter) and a reliable source of information for your particular vehicle. The diagnostic information from the manufacturer will hold great significance during the diagnosis of P0811 error code. You may also need an oscilloscope in order to diagnose input and output speed sensor malfunctions. Using the vehicle information source, find the technical service bulletin or TSB for your specific vehicle’s year, make, model, engine. Now match the symptoms, and the code stored and see what steps the manufacturer is suggesting.

You can now proceed to scanning the code since the clutch is functioning correctly. Connect your diagnostic scanner to the vehicle and retrieve all the codes stores and freeze frame data. Make not of these codes in the order of occurrence too for future references just in case the code is intermittent. Clear all the codes and go for a test-drive, if the PCM enters readiness mode you have an intermittent problem, which may have to worsen before correct diagnosis can be made. However, if the code immediately resets, look for diagnostic flow-charts, connector pinout charts, and face views as well as component testing steps from the TSB. With the key on and engine off, using the DVOM test the voltage, ground and signal at the transmission input and output speed sensors. There’s typically reference voltage, signal wire and a ground are found in the input and output speed sensor circuits, you can use an oscilloscope to inspect any issues in the pattern of the speed sensor. There may be spikes or glitches that the oscilloscope may pick up, it should be connected to the signal circuit and the ground so that it can work properly.

You will find this code occur due to excessively work out components present in the vehicle, which are also responsible for other transmission slippage codes to be set too.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0811 Code

  • Concluding an issue with the starter/solenoid instead of the clutch position sensor
  • Prematurely concluding an issue with the PCM module
