OBD Code P0810 - Clutch Position Control Error

<<See All OBD Codes

The OBD code P0810 is stored when the Powertrain Control Module or the PCM has noticed a problem with the clutch position sensor circuit. This clutch is also known as a start switch, because it has to be closed in-order for the starter to work. This code is only for manual transmissions, so if it does show up in an auto transmission vehicle, then the issue lies mainly with the PCM module or an error with the programming.

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0810

Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:

To start off get hold of a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM) and a vehicle information source specific to your vehicle. You can use it to also find the technical service bulletin (TSB) that match perfectly to your vehicle's year of make, model and engine. Also, match the symptoms exhibited, and the code stored to see the diagnostic steps mentioned by the manufacturer.

Now you can go ahead and connect your scanner to the diagnostic port and retrieve all the codes, and freeze the frame data. Write down all the codes present in their order of occurrence just in case you need to rule out if the code is intermittent. Clear the codes and take your vehicle on a test drive and notice if the code returns or if the PCM enters readiness mode. If the latter occurs then you have an intermittent condition mostly, and this will unfortunately have to worsen to be able to do correct diagnosis.

If the code is reset, then you will have to search your vehicle information source to locate the diagnostic flow-charts, connector face views, connector pinout charts and component testing procedures/specifications. These will help you sort the matter out efficiently and quickly. Now use the DVOM and test the voltage and ground circuits present at the clutch position sensor. If the clutch pedal position sensor is working fine, you can use the same DVOM and test the controllers from the circuit. Do this before testing the resistance. If you still notice that the code P0810 is stored and your vehicle is an auto transmission vehicle, then the issue is with a failed PCM/TCM or a programming error may also be present.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0810 Code
