P0588 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions
OBD Code P0588 - Cruise Control Vent Control Circuit High
The
cruise control system controls the speed of your vehicle, it does so, via
vacuum. For this the Cruise Control Vent Solenoid releases vacuum if the
vehicle has to slow down. If it doesn't perform as requested by the vehicle,
then the P0588 code is set. This then automatically disables the cruise
control.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0588
The
OBD Code P0588 is a common code, so don’t worry about it much. Your vehicles
Cruise Control System is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module or PCM and
the Cruise Control Module. They both work together in-order to control the speed
of your vehicle. The PCM is capable of determining if the vehicles speed is not
being controlled as it should, when it notices such malfunction it will
automatically run a test on the whole cruise control system. If either of the
two (Voltage or resistance reading from the cruise control vent) are deviant
from the manufacturer’s settings, the PCM will officially trigger P0588 code.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0588
If you want to easily diagnose this
fault code, then all you have to do is to follow these two steps:
Step
1 - The first focus to resolve the
error code P0588 has to be the cruise control switch. This is located under the
steering wheel. In-order to get access to it, you will have to dismantle
certain parts, and for this you will need the help of your car’s manual. The
manual holds great significance here, because varied models will have different
steps to remove parts, and even during assembling them you will need its assistance.
Once you have gotten some clarity, that the switch is the issue, you need to
purchase a new one and start the dismantling process.
Locate your vehicle's battery and
disconnect it, remove the steering wheel column bolt covers (Use a
screwdriver/ratchet if needed). With caution, remove the airbag cluster from
the center of the steering wheel, for this you will first have to unbolt it
from the back of the steering wheel. Detach the electrical connectors connected
to the airbag cluster, do this, by simply pressing the side clips and slowly
pulling them from the hard-plastic circumference. To get full access to the
switch, you will have to completely remove the steering wheel, you may need a
special puller for this. Now detach the switch by removing all the bolts
holding it to the steering column bracket. You can finally replace it with the
new one, and trace back your steps in the opposite direction to put everything
back into its place. Again, refer your vehicle manual as much as needed to be
sure. After you’ve sorted all that, reconnect the battery, and take your
vehicle for a test-drive. Avoid traffic hours for safety reasons.
Step
2 - You will now resolve another very
common problem associated with this OBD code, mechanical issues prevailing in
the Cruise control Vacuum system. There may be damage to the cruise control
vacuum solenoid, or a vacuum leak in the system etc. You will be able to spot
them easily upon visual inspection. Repair or replace all the components that
are damaged as needed. If there’s a vacuum leak, be sure to fix it right away,
as it can lead to terrible issues if not resolved. If you aren’t confident
about the locations of the components, and or the diagnostic procedures refer
the vehicles manual.
Common
Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0588 Code
- A failed and unresponsive Cruise
control vent solenoid
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has
failed to function
- Problematic wiring
