OBD Code P0585 - Cruise Control Multi-Function Input A/B Correlation

<<See All OBD Codes

Your vehicle has a cruise control system, which automatically controls the speed of your car. This cruise control system has several input switches aka coast and accelerate. If the PCM sees any signal from more than one of those switches, it will set the P0585 code. This will disable the cruise control system.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0585

As mentioned above, the PCM controls the cruise control system by using the inputs from the multifunction switch. The multifunction switch controls functions in multiple systems, for example; it may share input signals from the turn signals, windshield wiper system, cruise control system etc. It may typically act as a lever for the turn signals, at the same time house the actual turn signal switch.

What causes this problem with the Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "A"/"B" Correlation?

  • Defectiveness in the multifunction switch
  • Poor cruise control servo motor
  • Shorted or open circuits in the cruise control system
  • Malfunctioning cruise control module, PCM, or a programming error

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0585

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0585 code:

  • First check if your vehicle is equipped with a drive-by-wire throttle control system, then observe if codes related to it are stored. You will have to diagnose and repair those first, so that you can safely continue diagnosing the OBD error P0585
  • If you notice any TPS (Throttle position sensor), they will also have to be diagnosed and repaired, prior to continuation of diagnosis of your current error.
  • Procure the these for diagnosing P0585 error; a scanner a digital volt/ohm meter (DVOM) and vehicle information from the manufacturer.
  • Visually inspect the cruise control systems wiring and all the connectors. Then proceed to connecting the scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port and retrieve all of the stored codes and freeze frame the data. Make a record of all this information for the future diagnosis. Now, clear all the codes and take your vehicle on a test-drive, until the PCM enters readiness mode or until the error code P5085 is reset. If the former situation occurs, safely conclude that there’s an intermittent condition and it perhaps will worsen before the successful diagnosis can be made. If the code is reset, then simply continue on.
  • Using the vehicle source, obtain the component testing procedures and specifications, wiring diagrams, connector pinout charts, diagnostic flowcharts connector face views etc. This will enable in correct diagnosis.
  • Look through your vehicles TSB and locate an entry pertaining to your issue. Check for the same code and the symptoms exhibited, this also will help you with diagnosis.
  • At the multifunction switch, use the DVOM to check voltage and ground circuits. If you discover no voltage, use the positive lead of the DVOM to probe system fuses, the negative test lead will go to the ground.
  • Avoid false result by ensuring the fuses are tested with the circuit that is loaded. Create a new ground if it’s not available for this test. Then move on to locating the appropriate ground junction and ensure that it is secure.
  • If both the ground and voltage are present, use the DVOM to test the multifunction switch as per manufacturers recommendations. If the switch doesn’t comply with the manufacturer’s specifications, then conclude it as defective.
  • Use the DVOM to test the cruise control servo motor if the multifunction switch is functioning properly. Here also, you will have to follow the recommended steps by the manufacturer and accordingly suspect the motor as defective if it is deviant. Before using the DVOM to test the circuit resistance, first disconnect all the related controllers to steer away from damage. In some vehicles a dedicated cruise control module is present in addition to the PCM. In others the cruise control system is integrated with the Body Control Module (BCM) or the General Electrical Module (GEM).

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0585 Code

  • Failed cruise control switch
  • Failed Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
  • Wiring issue near the PCM or cruise control system
