OBD Code P050F - Brake Assist Vacuum Too Low

The
air density that is vacuum pressure is weighed in kilopascal units (kPa) or
inches of mercury (Hg). With the help of a thick rubber grommet, the VBS is
inserted into the housing of the vacuum brake booster. The resistance of VBS
will decrease as the vacuum pressure increases which results in increased
circuit voltage in VBS. A reverse action will take place when the pressure of
vacuum decreases. The PCM will receive this variation in voltage as the changes
occur in vacuum brake booster pressure and responds accordingly.
The
vacuum brake booster is present between the brake pedal and the master
cylinder. It is locked to the firewall of the passenger compartment (generally
in front of the driver seat). You can access while the hood is open. The
actuator rod of the booster projects through the firewall and gets fixed to the
brake pedal arm. The other end of the actuator rod will press the piston of the
master cylinder which in turn will force the brake fluid through the brake
lines and starts to brake at each wheel. The brake booster has a metal housing
with a pair of large vacuum diaphragms in it which is called dual-diaphragm
vacuum brake booster. Few vehicles use single booster which is rare. A one-way
check valve is present which will prevent the loss of vacuum when it is placed
under a roof.

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error Obd Code P050F
It
is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps to follow to
diagnose the P050F code:
- Separate
the connector from the VBS with the engine off and key on. Now use the positive
test lead of the DVOM to examine the reference voltage at the exact pin of the
connector. Use the negative test lead and test the ground to see if there is
presence of ground or reference voltage.
- Check
the VBS with the help of DVOM by following the procedures and specifications as
mentioned by the manufacturer. If the sensor fails to obey the specification,
then there must be a fault.
- With
the KOER, connect the positive lead of DVOM to check the signal voltage at the
position of VBS connector. Connect the negative lead to the ground with a good
battery.
- There
has to be a similar voltage as displayed by the MAP sensor on the scanner data
display. You will also find a vacuum pressure to the voltage chart in the
service manual of your vehicle. Now compare the voltage you found at the signal
circuit to the exact entry on the chart.
- Use
the DVOM to ensure that the VBS signal circuit voltage is present and locate
your PCM. Check the VBS signal circuit with the help of positive test lead of
the DVOM.
- Connect the negative end to the ground. If there is no signal at the corresponding circuit of the PCM, then there must be an opening between PCM and VBS. If all the circuits are in right place and the VBS is as specified, then there must be a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) problem or programming error.
