P050a OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

OBD Code P050A - Cold Start Idle Air Control System Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

Do you know what an OBD code P050A is? What are its symptoms and possible causes? Then read further to know about P050A code. As the engine starts with a pre- warming up condition, the engine control module (ECM) manages both the engine idle speed and ignition timing. This promotes the activation of 3-way catalyst, where it heats them and reduces the emissions.

The IAC valve sends the air flow through the throttle body into the intake manifold of the engine, when it is idle. Very little air is made to enter the engine through the throttle bore while the throttle plate is closed. The engine will not stand still with this less amount of air. It is impossible to promote a smooth idle with a stable supply of vacuum as the variation is engine temperature and atmospheric pressure needs different degrees of intake air.

To calculate engine RPM, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) will use the input data from crankshaft / camshaft position sensor. The engine idle speed is designed for a particular RPM level and the PCM uses the IAC motor to realize it. A voltage signal will be sent from the PCM to the IAC motor, if the engine RPM is higher than expected. The valve is extended to the seat and flow of air to the engine is restricted where the level of RPM decreases. Similarly, if the engine RPM is lower than expected, the PCM will show opposite voltage signal. Now the motor withdraws from the seat and more air is allowed in which increases the RPM. Since the PCM targets the RPM level accurately, the valve will move in small increments.

What causes this problem with Cold Start Idle Air Control System Performance?

  • Damaged or poor IAC valve
  • Leaky vacuum
  • Circuits or connectors are either shorted or open
  • Damaged electronic
  • Defective coolant temperature sensor

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P050A

  1. IAC Valve - If the IAC valve is dirty or broken, it will not allow sufficient air into the engine. Clean the valve or replace the parts.
  2. IAC Valve Connectors - If there are any shorted circuits or openings in your connectors, replace or fix them right away to avoid this error code.
  3. Electronic Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor - Is your ECT sensor broken? Are there any damages? Are you looking for the right replacement part? Then Parts Avatar can offer them at affordable price.

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error Obd Code P050A

It is essential to diagnose this fault code and here are some steps for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P050A code:

  • If you have to diagnose this code, then you need a diagnostic scanner, DVOM, and a reliable source of information.
  • For a successful diagnosis you will need a few of your vehicle information like component testing procedures, specifications, diagrams of wiring, connectors of face views, connector pinout charts and flowcharts.
  • You can do a quick diagnosis by visually inspecting the IAC valve, all the related wires and connectors. Look for any problematic damages on the wiring joints on top of the engine. If there is carbon foul on the seats and IAC valve, the valve will not sit correctly.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation to clean the valves. The IAC motor can be tested using DVOM.
  • Measure the resistance with the help of test leads by disconnecting the motor from the joint. There can be a bad motor, if it does not obey the specifications.
  • If the IAC motor is within specification, reconnect them and check the input voltage circuit and ground using the test leads of DVOM. If everything is perfect, then the IAC motor can be faulty.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P050A Code

  • Insufficient intake air volume
  • Broken idle air control valve
  • Damaged Fuel injection system
  • Damaged Engine Control Module (ECM)
