OBD Code P04A8 - Exhaust Pressure Control Valve "B" Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low

<<See All OBD Codes

OBD II trouble code P04A8 is technically described as Exhaust Pressure Control Valve B Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low wherein the "B" indicates the problem is with a portion of the system circuit, instead of a particular symptom or component. Diagnostic trouble code P04A8 is set when the PCM detects a low exhaust pressure control valve circuit signal. Due to this trouble code you may start facing problems like difficulty while starting, poor engine performance and increased emissions.

Learn More about OBD Error Code P04A8

P04A8 is a generic powertrain diagnostic trouble code which usually set when PCM determines that there is an incorrect signal from exhaust pressure control valve. The Exhaust Pressure Control Valve controls exhaust back pressure during cold temperatures. The powertrain control module (PCM) uses information from the exhaust back pressure sensor, intake air temperature sensor and manifold absolute pressure sensor to diagnose control of the valve. When it diagnose that wrong signals are coming from exhaust pressure control valve then PCM sets this OBD code P04A8.

What causes this problem with the Exhaust Pressure Control Valve "B" Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low?

  • Open or shorted harness of exhaust pressure control valve
  • Poor electrical connections
  • Exhaust pressure control valve failure
  • PCM failure (Rare)

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P04A8

  1. Powertrain Control Module - The powertrain or engine control module is a powerful computer that manages the engine's ignition, fuel injection, and emission systems. Make sure it should work efficiently.
  2. Exhaust Pressure Control Valve - Exhaust pressure control valve operation is often similar to that of the throttle body. It uses an electronically controlled plate to restrict exhaust flow as determined by the PCM. Replace it if you discover it malfunctioned.
  3. Exhaust Pressure Sensor - It is also one of the crucial components responsible for storing this trouble code. So, make sure exhaust pressure sensor is working properly else can lead to associated trouble codes.

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P04A8

Below mentioned are some common symptoms for the OBD code P04A8. If you discover any of them then take your vehicle to a reputed repair facility and get it rectified at earliest to avoid any major issue in near future.

  • Trouble while starting vehicle
  • Decreased engine performance
  • Enhanced emissions
  • Illuminated check engine light

How To Correct P04A8 Exhaust Pressure Control Valve "B" Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low

It is always suggested to resolve the stored trouble codes as soon as possible because at initial stage, you might not face any drivability issues but in a short span of time it can create major problems. Below mentioned are some repairs and replacements which might help you to resolve this code:

  • Replace the faulty exhaust pressure valve
  • Inspect the wiring and connections carefully and repair or replace the damaged ones

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P04A8

Diagnosing trouble code P04A8 is not difficult but it is always recommended to get your vehicle diagnosed by an experienced diagnostician because it may require some diagnosing tools and major replacements. Below mentioned are the steps to diagnose the trouble code P04A8:

  • Visually inspect the exhaust pressure control valve and the related wiring.
  • Check for the loose connections and defective wiring and repair the damaged ones.
  • Check the internal resistance of the solenoid by using digital multimeter set.
  • Compare the resistance measurement to the specified one and if it is out of limits, the solenoid should be replaced.
  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts to check for power at the solenoid (usually 12 volts). To do this, connect the negative meter lead to ground and the positive meter lead to the solenoid B+ terminal on harness side of the connector. If the meter reads out of limits (OL) there is an open circuit between the PCM and sensor that will need to be located and repaired.
  • Inspect the ground portion of the circuit. Use a digital multimeter set to ohms to check for continuity to ground. If the meter reads out of limits (OL) there is an open circuit between the PCM and solenoid that will need to be located and repaired.
