OBD Code P0483 - Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction

<<See All OBD Codes

P0483 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for "Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction". This generic powertrain/engine diagnostic trouble code typically applies to all OBDII equipped engines. It means that the cooling fan has been commanded to turn on or off, but the ECM did not detect a voltage change that indicated that the fan actually did turn on or off. P0483 could have been set because of mechanical temperature issues.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0483

OBD II code P0483 is technically described as Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction which indicates PCM has detected an incorrect amount of voltage either too high or too low in the electric cooling fan control circuit. The Cooling Fan Module is usually managed by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) based upon inputs wired to it. PCM receives these inputs via voltage signals to determine engine coolant and intake air temperature, air conditioner pressures, and vehicle speed. If in case these inputs do not match normal operating voltages stored in the PCM’s memory, this code will be stored. The reason could be mechanical temperature issues like incorrect coolant temperature or failed cooling fan circuit. When the engine control module (PCM) cannot control the cooling fan as desired, it will set code P0483.

What causes this problem of Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction?

  • Faulty cooling fan control module
  • Failed engine cooling fan
  • Inoperative cooling fan relay
  • Problems within wiring
  • Loose connections
  • PCM failure

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0483

  1. Coolant Temperature Sensor - The sensor works by measuring the temperature that's being given off by the thermostat and/or the coolant itself. The temperature is then sent to the on-board control system. It plays an important role in storing this code. If it is malfunctioned, replace it immediately.
  2. Cooling Fan Harness - A defective cooling fan harness could also be causes of storing trouble code so make sure it should work efficiently.
  3. Cooling Fan - A faulty cooling fan always create all the associated trouble codes. Always repair or replace the cooling fan in no time if ever you find it faulty.
  4. Power Steering Pump - A power steering pump provides the required hydraulic pressure to steer your automobile with a minimal effort on the steering wheel. Repair or replace it if you discover it inoperative.
  5. Powertrain Control Module - Powertrain Control Module (PCM),is the brains of the engine control system, so when the brain is not functioning correctly neither is the engine or anything else that the microprocessor controls - which may include the charging system, transmission, various emission controls and communications.

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0483

This issue should not be unattended as it could develop into something much more serious fairly quickly. Below are the common symptoms for the code P0483.

  • Decreased Air-conditioned efficiency
  • Engine overheating
  • Blustered fuse
  • Illuminated check engine light

How To Correct P0483 Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction

The Code P0483 should be addressed immediately else can create serious issues very quickly. As the main symptom of this code is engine overheating which should not be neglected because it can further lead to engine damage. To fix this code one should first inspect then repair or replace the following parts:

  • Begin with the inspection of cooling fan motor by performing voltage and a ground test on it.
  • Replace all the faulty fuses.
  • Repair or replace all the defective relays and circuitry within the system.
  • Replace the faulty coolant temperature sensor.
  • Repair or replace the damaged or corroded wiring and connectors.
  • Inspect the fan motor if it is inoperative or faulty replace it in no time.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0483

The step by step analysis and diagnosis is recommended by a qualified technician using high grade diagnostic tools to check for all the problems and solving them.

  • Visually inspect the connectors and wiring.
  • Clear the diagnostic trouble codes from memory, and see if P0483 returns. If it does not, then the connections were most likely your problem.
  • If the code does return, verify the integrity of the cooling system.
  • Remove the radiator cap and insure that it will seal properly to the radiator.
  • Verify the resistance specifications for your particular vehicle.
  • With a scan tool that can activate the cooling fans, turn on the cooling fans. If there is no 12 volts to the fan, repair the wiring from the PCM or relay to the fan, or possibly a bad PCM.
  • Check to make sure you have a good ground at the cooling fan module.
  • Using the scan tool to actuate the cooling fan module, see if the test light comes on each time the scan tool actuates the fan.
  • If you still continue to get a P0483 code, this would most likely indicate a failed cooling fan module.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0483 Code

Mistakes usually happen when you do not thoroughly check all the associated parts while diagnosing which actually leads to unnecessary replacements. Make sure you check each and every part carefully before replacing.
