Error Code P045D: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P045D - Exhaust Gas Recirculation "B" Control Circuit High
Love
for travelling turning into nightmares? Not anymore! With Parts Avatar you can
pull yourself together. Here’s how we are always there to help you, the OBD
Error Code P045D, a generic powertrain code, is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC)
strictly concerned with all the OBD-II vehicles with an Exhaust Gas
Recirculation System installed in it. Varying from brands like Land Rover, GMC,
Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler, Ford, Toyota, Honda, etc (but not specifically
limited to these). Though the repair steps are general, but may vary depending
on the make/model. It should be noted that all these Engine Codes signify a
failure in the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system, especially the
electrical aspect. The EGR installed functions to prevent the formation of
destructive Nox (oxides of nitrogen) in the cylinders.
Also, the EGR is operated by an engine management computer, that opens and closes the EGR and regulates the speed, load and temperature in order to maintain the required cylinder head temperature. The two wires on the EGR connecting to the electrical solenoid are through which the computer activates it. The potentiometer located on the EGR Solenoid signals the position of the EGRs pintle (the operating mechanism that opens and closes the passage).

Working
similarly like the diminishing lights in your home, as when the switch is
turned on the lights glow brighter as the voltage is increased. On the contrary,
the Engine computer fails to notice the voltage change as it attempts to open
or close the EGR indicating it stuck at a position.
The
code P045D EGR control circuit “B” denotes no high voltage change to indicate
the opening or closing of the EGR. On the other hand, the code P045C is
generally identical indicating the circuit being low as opposed to high. A
vehicle specific manual should be referred to in order to determine the “B” EGR
circuit in that particular case.
The
unleaded fuel could lead to the production of NOx under extreme temperatures in
the engine’s cylinder. The EGR operates to map a regulated amount of exhaust
gas back into the intake manifold. It serves the purpose to dilute the incoming
fuel mixture sufficiently to low down the cylinder head temperature below that
at which NOx forms. So, the EGR operation becomes imperative for more reasons
than preventing the NOx emissions, providing an advanced timing for more power
without denotation, and a limited fuel mixture for a rational and a better fuel
economy.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P045D
It
is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic
should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P045D code to be
stored:
The
hood is required to be opened and the engine has to be started. If the engine
has the possibility of a rough idle, the plug on the EGR is to be pulled. On
smoothing out of the engine, the pintle is stuck in the EGR. shut down the
engine and completely change the EGR. see and check the wire connector on the
“B” EGR. in total there are 5 wires, the two outermost wires supply battery
voltage and the ground. The terminal at the centre is the 5-volt reference
terminal. The connector has to be inspected thoroughly for any pushed out,
sticking out, corroded or bent pins. Inspect the wiring harness for any uneven
or missing insulation or possible shorts. Look closely for the broken or
damaged wires that could lead to and cause an open circuit. Through the use of
a voltmeter, detect either end terminal with the red lead and ground the black
lead. On turning the key on, look for 12 volts displays and both end terminals.
When
no voltage is displayed it could indicate a damaged wire between the EGR and
the ignition buss. If 12-volts displays on one side only, the EGR has an
internal open. Supplant the EGR. disconnect the connector from the EGR and turn
off the engine and turn on the key, and inspect both the outer terminals for
power. Carefully observe and make notes of which one has 12-volts and replace
the connector. the terminal which has no power, is the ground terminal, place a
paper clip on this terminal. Attach the paper clip to the jumper. Ground the
wiring of the jumper. On the energizing of the jumper, there will be an audible
‘click’. Detach the ground wire and turn on the engine. The wire should be
grounded again. This time the engine will begin to run rough as the EGR is
energized and smooth out as the ground has been removed. On clicking of the EGR
if the engine begins to run rough, the EGR is good and the problem is caused by
some electrical interface. If not so, the engine needs to be shut down and the
EGR has to be replaced. Examine the centre terminal on the EGR connector. Next,
turn the key on. If there is no problem in the functioning of the computer,
there will be a display of 5.0-volts. Now turn the key off.
Using
the EGR wiring diagram, locate the “EGR Reference Voltage” terminal on the
computer. A pin or a paper clip should be placed on the end of the computer
connector at this point to back-probe the terminal. Then the key should be
turned on, and if there’s 5.0 Volts flashing, that means the computer working
is good and the real issue lies with harness connecting to the EGR. No voltage
present signifies a bad computer. Also, here’s a tip to repair the EGR circuit
without replacing the computer: the wiring diagram should be looked at, then
the coolant temperature voltage reference terminal should be located. This
terminal should be explored with the key on. If there is 5-volt ref. voltage
present, the key should be turned off and the two reference terminals used in
the test should be marked. Next, the computer’s connector needs to be pulled
and a jumper wire should be soldered between the two terminals. Finally, then
the connector needs to be installed and the EGR would start operating normally.
