The PCM (Powertrain control module) controls the electric pump where the AIR pump relay control circuit is grounded and it further provides voltage to the solenoid valve and AIR pump. The fresh air supply tube has the check in valve which prevents the backing up of exhaust gases into the AIR pump. The driver is monitored by the PCM which activates the AIR pump for faults. The control circuit would pull the voltage close to zero when the PCM commands the AIR pump relay to on. The battery voltage of the control circuit will be present, once the relay is commanded off. If the voltage of the PCM is higher, then the P044F error will be set.

What causes this problem with the Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve "A" Circuit High?

• Damaged air pump is not functioning.
• A damaged or opened air bypass solenoid harness.
• Poor electrical connection to the air bypass solenoid circuit.
• Connection to the ground of control circuit is damaged.
• Voltage short on the control circuit as it is damaged or open.
• A short on the battery feed circuit to the solenoid as it is open
• A short on the battery feed to the relay control circuit as it is open.

• The engine oil will show dilution from the ECU’s attempt in order to raise the temperature of the engine. If you can see the exhaust manifold, spray or pour a little amount of water on the exhaust port of each of the cylinder. On the good cylinders, water will evaporate quickly whereas the process will be slow in the missing cylinder. If this is not possible, then pull the plugs apart and check its condition. Disconnect the valve and connect the red voltmeter lead to the IMRC valve power wire and connect the black one to the ground.
