Guide To P0332 OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P0332 - Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)
P0332 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for
"Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)". If your knock sensor on
Bank #2 is generating a low output voltage (perhaps under 0.5V), then it will
trigger a Diagnostic Trouble Code P0332. Typical knock sensor circuits consist
of one 5-volt signal wire. If voltage readings exceed a variation of 10-percent
from the manufacturer’s reference voltage, a code will be stored in the PCM and
a malfunction indicator lamp will be illuminated. This can result in higher
emissions and other problems for the engine, as well.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0332
Diagnostic Trouble Code P0332 is technically described as
Knock sensor (KS) 2, bank 2 -low input. The P0332 code means that the Knock
Sensor is not working properly. It indicates that the #2 knock sensor output is
lower than normal specification. A knock sensor tells the engine computer when
one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking" and the
computer uses this information to tune the engine so that it doesn't
knock. If the knock sensor 2 circuit gives a low input signal, the PCM
(powertrain control module) record a P0332 code and illuminate the Check Engine
Light. If this light is on when you go in for an OBD-II emissions test, your
vehicle will not pass. In most states, and with most vehicles, this means that
you will not be able to legally register your vehicle or renew your
registration. It’s better to resolve this trouble code as soon as possible to
avoid all further problems and expensive repairs.
What causes the problem of Knock Sensor 2
Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)?
- Knock sensor failure
- Cooling system issues
- Flawed EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system
- Faulty knock sensor circuit or its connectors
- Lean air/fuel ratio
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0332
- Knock
Sensor - It is one of a
very crucial part in the proper functioning of your vehicle. Its function is to
sense vibrations caused by engine knock or detonation. Trouble Code P0332 will
automatically set if knock sensor is malfunctioned. So, replace it as soon as
you find it faulty.
- Transmission Sensor - The transmission speed sensors are used to
calculate the actual gear ratio of the transmission while in use. There are
generally two speed sensors that work in conjunction to provide accurate
transmission data to the vehicle's powertrain control module. Ensure its
efficient functioning as it regulates the other related components to this
trouble code. If found faulty repair or replace as required.
- Engine Control Unit - An engine control unit (ECU), also commonly called an engine control module (ECM), is a type of electronic control unit that controls a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance. Make sure it is working fine as it ensures optimal engine performance. If engine will not work properly how come the other parts, so if in case you discover it malfunctioned then repair or replace it at earliest.
- Powertrain Control Module - Powertrain Control Module (PCM),is
the brains of the engine control system, so when the brain is not functioning
correctly neither is the engine or anything else that the microprocessor
controls - which may include the charging system, transmission, various
emission controls and communications ... Kindly, repair or replace it if found
frayed.
Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0332
You may notice drivability problems including fluctuation
engine RPM, a loss of power, and perhaps some hesitation. There may also be
other symptoms.
- Check Engine Light will illuminate
- Engine pings on acceleration
- Engine may be running hotter than normal
- In rare cases, the engine may not exhibit noticeable
symptoms
How To Correct P0332 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)
If your knock sensor is faulty, the PCM cannot get the
proper information from it to predict and correct for the problem. This can
lead to an engine that runs rough, overheats and has decreased fuel efficiency.
So, it’s better to fix this issue before it head towards serious problems.
Below mentioned are some repairs and replacements which can help you fix this
code:
- Replacing frayed or broken wires and connectors in the
sensor circuit
- Ensuring that the sensor and circuit are properly
grounded
- Replacing the knock sensor
- Addressing the root cause in the EGR or cooling system
- Replacing or reprogramming the PCM (rare)

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0332
P0332 does not usually have any drivability concerns
associated with it. This code should not prevent vehicle operation even after
the Check Engine Light is seen. However, it may cause damage to the engine in
near future. Steps to diagnose this error code are as follows:
- Record the freeze frame information and then duplicate
the code setting conditions with a test drive at the recorded freeze frame conditions.
- Carefully watch the serial data stream readings for each
and every knock sensor.
- Verify that the knock sensor is sending a signal to the
PCM? If so, look at the coolant temp readings, do they look normal? If not,
deal with this as soon as possible.
- Ensure that the engine isn't running too lean, as this
too can cause NOx formation.
- Tap the engine block with a small hammer and watch the
knock sensor and timing serial data to see how the sensor reacts to this type
of physical test.
- Physically inspect the knock sensor and its wiring
harness to see if there's evidence of chafing and/or corrosion.
- If in case knock sensor need to be replaced then always
replace the knock sensor harness as well because the harness commonly causes
problems.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0332
Code
With any code, even the most experienced technician can make
simple mistakes and overlook the basics and with this code common misdiagnosis
which usually people do are:
- Knock Sensor was replaced when the cause of the problem
was the Knock Sensor wiring.
- Knock Sensor replaced when the cause of code P0332 was a cooling system problem.
- Knock Sensor replaced when the cause of code P0332 was an
EGR system malfunction.
