Error Code P0284: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P0284 - Cylinder 8 Contribution/Balance

<<See All OBD Codes

Your vehicle’s PCM keeps track of the power output generated by each cylinder. It does this by comparing the increase in speed, or

acceleration, of the crankshaft of each cylinder during the power stroke.

When it senses that one or more of them are generating less power than the rest, the PCM stores a fault code P0284.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0284

Even though there are a handful of possible causes that could be behind the P0284 code, they all have to do with the fuel injector.

What causes this problem with the Cylinder 8 Contribution/Balance?

  • A clogged fuel injector in cylinder eight
  • A defective fuel injector in cylinder eight
  • A filthy fuel injector in cylinder eight
  • A low electrical connection in cylinder eight’s fuel injector circuit
  • A short or open in fuel injector harness of cylinder eight

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0284

  1. Fuel Injector - At the time the engine misfires; it overheats very fast and pre-ignites the mixture of fuel. A corroded fuel injector not only results in problems when driving, but the outcome will persist even when the engine is running poorly on energy. Rather than an engine running very slowly on power, it will become bumpy and irregular when the fuel storage is unexpected.
  2. Powertrain Control Module - A defected PCM could lead your car in failing to start or cause stalling issues when running. All signs point to short emissions that are going to appear, which means a failure to control the emissions system, so if your PCM is not working correctly, you should replace it immediately.
  3. Crankshaft - Stalling that occurs at irregular intervals have all to do with a problematic crankshaft position sensor. If the crankshaft position sensor or its wiring have any problems, it can cut off the crankshaft signal as the engine is running, resulting in the engine to stall, often and the case of a wiring problem. In this case, it may be a good idea to replace your failed crankshaft.
  4. Fuel Injector Harness - Wiring harness damage occurs regularly when a vehicle has been in a collision; frequent vibration, flexing, contact with heat and cold, water, ice, and salt can all ultimately have a major impact on the wiring. When situating the wire issue, the damaged wire or two can usually be fixed, or a new piece of wire can be intertwined, unless if wires are melted or hard to reach, its best to just replace the entire harness portion.
  5. Engine Control Module - A failed ECM could mean your car will fail in starting or may go into stall mode when running. This will cause poor emissions that may occur if failing to control the emissions system, so if your ECM is not functioning properly, you should have it replaced right away.

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0284

When a P0284 code is stored, you should expect to see at least one of the following symptoms related to it:

  • Your car vibrates or the engine rattles even when your car is inactive
  • The vehicle struggles to speed up
  • The car engine decreases in power
  • Your fuel economy declines
  • The Check Engine light turns on
  • The engine misfires

How To Correct P0284 Cylinder 8 Contribution/Balance

According to what went wrong that caused the code to be stored, any of the following steps could be needed to clear it from the system.

  • Perform cylinder compression and leak down tests to find out if you have a mechanical or sealing problem. Cylinder compression test readings should not differentiate more than 10%, and cylinder leak down shouldn’t go over 10%. Cylinder leak down also should not differentiate more than 10% between cylinders. If you have compression or leak down issues, such as worn rings, valve problems, or a head gasket problem, these may result in poor cylinder balancing, but not necessarily cylinder misfire.
  • You can use a mechanic’s stethoscope to compare the sound of the suspected fuel injector with its neighbours. You will hear a slight, but obvious, difference between a good injector and a faulty injector. Check with a professional before condemning the fuel injector and replacing it.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0284

A mechanic would start by monitoring the electrical connector on the fuel injector that belongs to cylinder eight. They’ll detect the harness-side to visualize if any of the pins have been pushed out or if there is any damage. The injector will also have to be surveyed for bent pins. Afterwards, they will also take study the wire that connects the fuel pump relay to the injector. At every new attempt, the mechanic will detect to see if the code has cleared out or if further work is necessary to correctly diagnose the case.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0284 Code

A fuel injector that is plugged, or even partially blocked, may also be the reason for this code. That’s why mechanics should conduct an injector flush even before continuing with replacing it, as it may still be efficient after a thorough cleansing.
