Error Code P0260: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P0260 - Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control "B" Intermittent
OBD-II
Code Decreased engine performance is defined as Injection Pump Fuel Metering
Control "B" Intermittent. It indicates that PCM has detected a
discrepancy in the signal voltage supplied to the electronic fuel control
actuator and the signal returned from the fuel metering control sensor. This
code could have been set because of mechanical or electrical issues and
pertains exclusively to diesel powered vehicles.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0260
P0260
is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for "Injection Pump Fuel Metering
Control “B” Intermittent (Cam/Rotor/Injector)". The Injection Pump
Metering Control Circuit "B" is usually found mounted inside / on the
side of the injection pump bolted to the engine. The Fuel Rack Position sensor
converts the amount of diesel fuel being delivered by the Fuel Quantity
Actuator to the injectors into an electrical signal for the PCM. PCM receives
this voltage signal to determine how much fuel it will put into the engine
based upon engine operating conditions.
If
the PCM input signals from the fuel metering control sensor does not coincide
with the voltage reading of the fuel control actuator driver signal, this type
of code will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp may be illuminated.
What causes this problem
Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control B Intermittent?
- Faulty
fuel injection pump actuator
- Problem
within wiring
- Frayed
fuel injection pump
- Faulty fuel rack position sensor
- PCM failure
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0260
- Fuel Injection Pump - A fuel injection pump is a very complex piece of
engineering. Each one is calibrated to deliver just the right quantity of fuel
via the fuel injector into the combustion chamber. This ensures the maximum
power output and optimum fuel efficiency.
- Fuel Injection Pump Actuator - Always replace the faulty fuel injection pump actuator to
avoid storing associated trouble codes.
- Fuel Rack Position Sensor - A faulty fuel
rack position sensor could also be the cause of this trouble code. Make sure it
should work properly else replace it.
- PCM - The Powertrain Control Module PCM is an on-board electronic control unit that primarily controls the charging, emission and transmission systems of the vehicle
Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0260
It is
always good to be aware of the symptoms of any trouble code as it will help you
to identify the code. Here are some common symptoms which you may notice when
this code appears:
- Reduced
engine performance
- Hesitation
while acceleration
- Trouble
while starting
- Excessive smoke while exhaust
- Illuminated check engine light
How to Correct P0260 Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control "B" Intermittent Error
Code
P0260 is an indication that the fuel injection pump cannot control fuel into
the engine intermittently, and the failure may be internal or external of the
injection pump. The problem would need to be verified in order to find and
repair the vehicle’s engine. Following repairs or replacements may help to fix
this code:
- Check
all the wiring and connections carefully. Repair or replace the damaged ones.
- Inspect
the fuel injection pump, replace if found faulty.
- Replace
the faulty fuel injection pump actuator.
- Replace
the failed PCM (Rare).

Easy Diagnosis of Engine Error OBD Code P0260
Below
mentioned are the steps to diagnose the trouble code P0260:
- Locate
the FRP sensor on your vehicle.
- Visually
inspect the connector and wiring.
- Pull
the connector apart and carefully inspect the terminals (the metal parts)
inside the connector.
- Use
electrical contact cleaner and a plastic bristle brush if cleaning of the
terminals is needed. Let dry and apply electrical grease where the terminals
contact.
- Clear
the diagnostic trouble codes from memory, and see if P0260 code returns.
- If
the P0260 code does return, we will need to test the FRP sensor and its
associated circuits.
- Connect
a Digital Voltmeter black lead to the ground terminal at the FRP sensor wiring
harness connector. Connect the red lead of the Digital Voltmeter to the power
terminal at the FRP sensor wiring harness connector. Voltmeter should read
either 12 volts or 5 volts. If not, repair the power or ground wire, or replace
the PCM.
- If
you continue to get a P0260, this would most likely indicate a failed FRP
sensor / Fuel Quantity Actuator, although a failed PCM could not be ruled out
until the FRP sensor / Fuel Quantity Actuator had been replaced.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0260 Code
In
order to avoid committing any mistake one should follow the proper diagnostic
steps and should seek help of experienced diagnostician if required. Sometimes
people do unnecessary replacements due to the lack of proper diagnosis. People
usually replace Injector pumps and Injectors wherein the actual cause is not
even diagnosed.
