Error Code P0226: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P0226 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch C Circuit Range/Performance
The P0226 fault code can be defined as throttle/pedal position
sensor/switch C circuit range/performance problem. It is a generic OBD-II code
which would indicate that the throttle/pedal position sensor/switch C circuit
has a range or performance which is causing the sensor input to the ECM to not
be the same as the expected voltage input as compared to the redundant throttle
position A.
Learn More about OBD Error Code P0226
Do you want to
learn something more about this fault code? The electronic throttle control
actuator comprises of throttle control motor, throttle position sensors etc.
The throttle position sensor would respond to the throttle valve movement.
There are two sensors in the throttle position sensor. These sensors are a type of potentiometers
which can transform the throttle valve position into the output voltage and
would start emitting the voltage signal to the engine control module. These
sensors also help in detecting the opening as well as closing speed of the
throttle valve and would feed the voltage signals to the engine control module.
The engine control module would judge the current opening angle of the throttle
valve from these signals and the engine control module would control the
throttle control motor to make the throttle valve opening angle properly in
response to the driving condition.
What causes this problem with the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch
C Circuit?
- Damaged,
short circuited, or corroded wiring and connectors
- The
TPS or pedal sensors might be faulty
- Mal-adjusted
TPS sensors
- Issue
of mechanical wear in the TPS sensor and/or throttle body
- Carbon
deposits in the throttle body that impede the movement of the throttle plate
- There
can be some failures in the powertrain control module
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0226
- Pedal Sensors - The P0226 code can also arise due to
some issues in the Pedal Sensors. So, it is advised to replace them as soon as
possible.
- Throttle Position
Sensor - Do you remember when was the last
time you got your car Throttle Position Sensor checked up? A damaged Throttle
Position Sensor can cause a lot of issues like displaying P0226 code.
- Powertrain Control
Module - Powertrain Control Module is an
important car part which should never be neglected. May be there is some fault
in it due to which P0226 code may start flashing.
- Engine Wiring
Connector - Is your Engine Wiring Connector damaged or broken?
Don’t worry as we have solutions for all your problems.
Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0226
Willing
to know some common symptoms of OBD Trouble Code P0226? Your wish is our
demand. Have a look at them below:
Common Symptoms
- The
sensor is ignored during braking and the throttle is shut completely during
stops
- The
throttle sets to a fixed position during failure
- Low
idle position resulting in uneven idle or jerking during braking
- Very poor
throttle response, or no response at all, during acceleration
- Disabled
cruise control
- Vehicle
speed limited to approximately 32 mph or less
- Check
engine light and electronic throttle control (ETC) light illumination
How To Correct P0226 Throttle Position Sensor/Switch C Circuit Range/Performance
Here are some
ways with the help of which you will be able to correct the OBD Code P0226
- Repairing
or replacing defective connectors or wiring to the sensor if they are corroded,
or have connector damage
- The
cuts or shorts in the wiring to the sensor should be properly repaired
- If
there are some defects in the throttle body control assembly, then it should be
replaced
- The
faulty engine control module should be replaced or reprogrammed
- The
battery should be disconnected. Any access or trim panels are removed for
access to the module
- The
engine control module connections should be disconnected and the module should
be removed. Install and secure the new module. The electrical connections
should then be connected
- Reconnect
the battery as well as charger to maintain battery charge if needed. Any
removed access or trim panels should be reinstalled
- The
engine control module is programmed to work with the vehicle for operation with
an approved scan tool or methods
- Carefully disconnect the charger and take your vehicle outside for a road test for proper operation

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0226
Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
- The
first and foremost thing which you should do is to scan the codes and document
the freeze frame data
- Then
you must clear the codes to check whether the concern comes back
- Visually
check of the wiring and connections to the throttle body sensor
- Disconnect
connection to the sensor and check for corrosion, or problems with pin
engagement
- Carefully
test for proper battery voltage to the sensor
- The
battery and charging system for proper operation should then be checked
- Test the sensor resistance and compare it to specifications
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0226 Code
- You
can always visually inspect for connections to the sensor to make sure they are
making good contact to the throttle control assembly
- Make
sure the battery and charging system are in good working conditions
- Search
for any problems with burnt or cut wiring to the sensor, or corrosion in the
connections
