P00BF - OBD Trouble Code

OBD Code P00BF - Mass or Volume Air Flow "B" Circuit Range/Performance - Air Flow Too High

<<See All OBD Codes

If you are experiencing unusual response of the throttle, lack of power forms the car engine, impact on the fuel economy and frequent illumination of the Check Engine Light, it might be an indication of the OBD Code P00BF error.

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a Mass or Volume Air Flow "B" Circuit Range/Performance – Air

Learn More About OBD Code P00BF

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor is a sensor mounted in a vehicle's engine air intake tract downstream from the air filter, and is used to measure the volume and density of air being drawn into the engine. The MAF sensor itself only measures a portion of the air entering and that value is used to calculate the total volume and density of air being ingested. The MAF may also be called a Volume Air Flow sensor. The powertrain control module (PCM) uses that reading along with other sensor parameters to ensure proper fuel delivery at any given time for optimum power and fuel efficiency. Basically, this P00BF diagnostic trouble code (DTC) means that there is a problem with the Mass or Volume Air Flow (MAF) "B" sensor circuit. The PCM detects that the actual MAF sensor frequency signal is not within a predetermined expected range of the calculated MAF value, and in this case, it’s determined that the air flow is too high.

What causes problem with the Mass Air Flow Sensor?

  • Faulty Mass Air Flow sensor
  • Intake air leakages
  • PCM failure or requiring reprogramming
  • Wiring and electrical problems

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P00BF

  1. Powertrain Control Module - P00BF error code also relates to problems with the powertrain that is not able to generate response in time causing distorted engine timing. Find all the Powertrain related parts with us.
  2. Diagnostic Tool - Choose professional scanning and diagnostic tools to detect and correct the OBD code error.
  3. Auto Switches & Sensors - Defective switches or faulty sensors can cause OBD error P00BF. So it will be a good decision to replace them now.
  4. Air Temperature Sensor - The Air Temperature sensor are usually exposed to air entering the engine. As it is a very important step in combustion, this sensor plays a crucial role in the performance. Replace faulty sensor now!
  5. Air Intake Kits - It is very important to check on the air intake system to maintain the proper air to fuel ratio and enable proper functioning of the engine. Buy quality air intake kits from us.
  6. Mass Air Flow Sensor - A faulty mass airflow sensor will cause problems similar to low compression or low vacuum, and will also show symptoms similar to when your vehicle has low fuel pressure from a faulty fuel pump. Thus, replace damaged/faulty MAF sensor today!

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P00BF

The engine control module (PCM) uses pressure sensors to determine the pressure in the fuel system. If the pressure drops too low, the PCM will set code P00BF. Some of the prime symptoms to this problem are mentioned below;

Common Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination
  • Rough engine with reduces response
  • Black smoke from exhaust pipe
  • Engine Stalling and not starting
  • Increased fuel consumptionn

How To Correct P00BF Mass or Volume Air Flow "B" Circuit Range/Performance - Air Flow Too High

The main components to look for error and correct the OBD error are following;

  • MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  • Air Intake Pipe
  • Intake Manifold Seal
  • Wiring/connections to the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P00BF

P00BF is properly diagnosed with an advanced scan tool capable of factory sensor readings (not just one from an auto parts store). A qualified technician can read the data from the advanced scan tool to determine when the problem occurred, or if it is still occurring. They may clear the code/light and test drive the vehicle while monitoring the scan tool data to see if the fault returns or is present.

The first step is to check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBS) that apply to your year/make/model/engine, and then do a visual inspection of the wiring and system components.

  • Inspect all MAF sensor wiring and connectors to make sure they are intact, not frayed, broken, routed too close to ignition wires/coils, relays, motors, etc.
  • Check for any obvious air leaks in the air intake system
  • Inspect the MAF sensor wires or film to see contaminations such as dirt, dust, oil, etc.
  • Carefully clean the MAF and air intake mesh.
  • Loss of vacuum to the MAP sensor can trigger this DTC
  • A low minimum air rate through the sensor bore may cause this DTC to set at idle or during deceleration. Inspect for any vacuum leaks downstream of the MAF sensor.
  • Monitor real-time sensor values from the MAF sensor, O2 sensors, etc. using a scan tool.
  • The barometric pressure (BARO) that is used in order to calculate the predicted MAF value is initially based on the MAP sensor at key ON.
  • A high resistance on the ground circuit of the MAP sensor can cause this DTC to set.
  • Do an exhaust back pressure test to determine if the catalytic converter may be clogged

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P00BF code

By far, the most common cause of a P00BF being stored is a disconnected MAF sensor. When the air filter is checked or replaced, the MAF sensor is often left disconnected. If your vehicle has recently been service, and a code P00BF is suddenly stored, suspect that the MAF sensor has simply been left unplugged.

Some of the common mistakes done while changing diagnosing the OBD code P00BF are:

  • Intake manifold leak
  • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor failure
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure
  • Wiring issue
