OBD Code P00B6 - Radiator Coolant Temperature/Engine Coolant Temperature Correlation

All OBD Codes
The major symptom of this code is that, emission coming from the vehicle
could increase due to the CTS taking longer to reach its operating temperature.
This increase in emissions is what causes the Check Engine Light to come on so
that the vehicle can be repaired as soon as possible.
OBD-II Code Cooling fans may stay on all the time is defined as a Radiator Coolant Temperature/Engine Coolant Temperature

ECT
sensor design usually consists of a thermal resistor that is dipped in a hard
resin and sealed in a metal or plastic housing. Brass is the most popular of
these housing materials because of its durability. In most cases, the ECT
sensor is threaded so that it may be screwed into a coolant passage in the
engine intake manifold, cylinder head, or block. The level of thermal
resistance in the ECT sensor decreases as coolant warms and flows across it.
This leads to increased ECT sensor circuit voltage at the PCM. As the engine
cools, sensor resistance increases and ECT sensor circuit voltage (to the PCM)
is reduced as a result.
The
PCM recognizes these fluctuations in voltage as changes in engine coolant
temperature. Fuel delivery and ignition timing strategy are among the functions
affected by actual engine coolant temperature and input data from the ECT
sensor. The radiator coolant temperature sensor monitors coolant temperature in
much the same manner as the ECT sensor. It is typically inserted into one of the
radiator tanks but may also be fitted into a pressurized coolant reservoir.
If the
PCM detects voltage signals from the ECT sensor and the radiator coolant
temperature sensor which differ from one another by greater than the maximum
allowable parameter, a code P00B6 will be stored and a malfunction indicator
lamp (MIL) may be illuminated. Multiple drive cycles with a failure may be
required for MIL illumination.
What causes the problem with the Radiator Coolant
Temperature/Engine Coolant Temperature Correlation?
- Faulty/Damaged Coolant Temperature Sensor
- Dirty or blocked Coolant Temperature Sensor
- Faulty radiator
- Seal around Coolant Temperature Sensor broken/damaged
- Damaged wiring/connections in the CTS circuit
- Faulty PCM (Powertrain Control Module)
- Bad fuse in the CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) circuit

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P00B6
This
code would be considered a moderately severe issue. This will vary on what
symptoms you have and how the fault is actually affecting your vehicle’s
performance. The fact that the CTS's functionality directly influences the
engine's air/fuel mixture, makes this an issue you do not want to leave
unattended. Neglect this problem long enough, and you could be faced with some
hefty engine repair bills.
Common Symptoms
- Erratic idle and hard cold start
- Engine stalling and not starting
- Increased fuel consumption
- Smoke coming out of exhaust
- Fuel leakage smell
- Incorrect temperature readings
- Declined engine performance and acceleration

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing OBD Code P00B6
The
most common mistake is to simply replacing the CTS without performing and
diagnostics at all. This happens a lot because the vast majority of the time it
is the sensor itself that has failed, as it undergoes a lot of stress and is a
high failure item so it can be easy to get lazy and just replace the sensor.
Measuring the wrong terminals in the connectors is also a major mistake. It is
important to know how to read the wiring diagrams so you know you are measuring
the correct circuits and follow the diagnose procedure.
