Error Code P0098: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P0098 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High

<<See All OBD Codes

Are you experiencing diminished fuel efficiency? Is your engine giving issues during cold start? Is the car engine stalling and losing acceleration? Is there increased emission coming from the car’s exhaust pipeline? All these can be the indication of OBD Code P0098.

OBD-II Code P0098 is defined as an Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0098

A stored code P0098 means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a high input signal from the 2-intake air temperature (IAT) sensor circuit on bank 1.

The Intake Air Temperature Sensor is used by the engine to measure the temperature of the air going into the charge air cooler. If the engine computer (PCM) determines that the reading from the sensor is not plausible, code P0098 will set.

What causes the problem of Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High Bank 1?

  • Problematic IAT (Intake Air Temperature) Sensor
  • Faulty wiring/ connections to the IAT sensor and circuit
  • PCM (Powertrain Control Module) fault in sensor
  • Break or damage in the intake/inlet pipe
  • Intake/inlet pipeline getting clogged
  • MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) damaged

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0098

  1. Air Temperature Sensor - The air entering the engine is detected by this sensor. As it is a very important step in combustion, this sensor plays a crucial role in the performance. Replace faulty sensor now!
  2. Air Intake Kits - The proper air to fuel ratio enables proper functioning of the engine, which is managed by the air intake systems. Replace air intake kits from us.
  3. Air Flow Sensor Connector - It is very important component as it provides vital information regarding the air intake to the engine control unit. Replace faulty connectors with us!
  4. Engine Control Module - Wrong OBD Error Code can also be stored due to faulty ECMs. It’s better to get the faulty ECM electricals replaced as soon as possible.
  5. Powertrain Control Module - P0098 error code can also flash due to rare problems with the PCM. Replace faulty PCM related components immediately.
  6. Diagnostic Tool - Choose a high grade and accurate diagnostic tools to detect and correct the OBD code error. Find all types of professional tools from us.
  7. Mass Air Flow Sensor - The MAF sensor will not be able to properly read the air entering the system thus hampering the air to fuel ratios directly impacting the engine’s output. Thus, it is advisable to replace them in time.

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0098

This P0098 error may cause reduced power, the engine may run rough, or the engine may crank but not start. There is typically an illuminated Check Engine light as well.

Common Symptoms

  • Significant Drop in engine power
  • Poor driveability & acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy and increased fuel consumption
  • Abnormal throttle response
  • General reduction in efficiency

How To Correct P0098 Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High

  • Replacing the IAT sensor 2
  • Repairing or replacing the faulty/damaged wiring or connections to the sensor and the circuit
  • Repairing and reprogramming the ECM

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0098

P0098 is properly diagnosed with an advanced scan tool capable of factory sensor readings (not just one from an auto parts store). A qualified technician can read the data from the advanced scan tool to determine when the problem occurred, or if it is still occurring. They may clear the code/light and test drive the vehicle while monitoring the scan tool data to see if the fault returns or is present.

Following are the steps to be followed for diagnosing the P0098 error:

  • A technician typically begins by hooking the vehicle up to an OBD-II scanner in order to verify that the code is present, and check for other codes.
  • This data along with freeze frame data is recorded, and the codes are then cleared to see if they reoccur.
  • Next, there should be a visual inspection of the wiring and connectors to check for loose connections, corrosion, or shorts.
  • Replacement of damaged wiring/connections to the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) Sensor 2.
  • Repairing faulty PCM (Powertrain Control Module) sensor that may require reprogramming.
  • Replacing leaky and damaged intake/inlet pipe immediately
  • Faulty MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) needs replacement as it directly hampers the engine performance.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0098 Code

  • Not checking for the IAT failure properly
  • Not following the diagnostic steps properly to locate the problem
  • Replacing parts before conducting thorough checks
