OBD Code P0083 - Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High (Bank 2)

<<See All OBD Codes

Is your car engine stalling and not starting? Is there an increase in the fuel consumption? Have you lost the response from the engine with sudden downfall in acceleration? All these can be an indication towards P0083.

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as an Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0083

  • P0083 is a general OBD-II code indicating an issue with bank 2 intake valve control solenoid. This code may be seen with P0081 and P0082. The vehicle also has a bank 1 valve control solenoid.
  • This code indicates that the PCM has detected a higher than normal voltage reading (or degree of resistance) from the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) circuit that controls intake valve timing for engine bank 2.

What causes the problem of Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High (Bank 2)?

  • Failure of ECU (Engine Control Unit)
  • Wiring and Harness in Intake Valve Control Solenoid Bank 2 is shorted or open
  • Faulty/Damaged electrical connection or connector in relation to the solenoid or circuit

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0083

  1. Engine Control Module - Problematic ECM affects the engine performance and output by affecting the exhaust and fuel delivery system. Replace faulty ECM components immediately.
  2. Variable Valve Timing - Faulty VVT reduces the engine’s performance, fuel economy or emissions of the vehicle. Thus, replace it immediately.
  3. Intake Manifold Solenoid - Damaged solenoids affects the air intake systems and the engine emission. Replace the damaged solenoid now!
  4. Diagnostic Tools - Use quality scan and diagnostic tools to solve OBD P0083 error code. Buy professional tools from us!

Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0083

The Intake Valve Control Solenoid uses oil pressure and an electrical solenoid to control the position of the exhaust valve. Newer vehicles are equipped with variable valve timing (VVT). This allows the engine control module (PCM) to adjust the opening and closing of the exhaust valve to improve fuel consumption while still providing the performance requested by the driver. When the PCM determines there is an issue with the signal from the Intake Valve Control Solenoid, the PCM will set code P0083.

Common Symptoms

  • Car entering the failsafe mode
  • Improper acceleration
  • Reduced engine power
  • Affected fuel economy

How To Correct P0083 Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High (Bank 2)

Some of the components that are directly affected and can be examined first to detect the problem and solve it are mentioned below.

  • Replacement of Bank 2 Intake Valve Control Solenoid
  • Removal and replacement of the Engine Control Unit
  • Poor or faulty electrical connection to be repaired
  • Replace or repair the wiring/harness in relation to the solenoid and circuit

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0083

Following are the steps to diagnose OBD Code P0083 error:

  • Install a professional level scan tool into the DLC port and check for all OBD-II codes present.
  • Freeze all the frame data associated with the codes present, and then clear the code.
  • Take the vehicle on a road test under the same conditions as found in the freeze frame data, including engine load, RPM, speed, coolant temperature, and drive time to check if the code reappears.
  • If the code reappears during the test drive, they continue with the visual inspection of all the components of the vehicle in association with the error. Confirm P0083 is present after the test drive and start with the specific diagnosis.
  • A visual inspection of the wiring harness for the intake valve control solenoid bank 2 should be conducted to check for damage, shorted, and broken wires. They check for the correctly installed and undamaged connectors and poor connections at any junction points, in association with the solenoid and circuit.
  • Use the scan tool to observe the live data stream from the intake valve control solenoid. If it confirms out of range sensor performance, then there is a problem with the solenoid and circuitry and thus needs replacement.
  • If sensor is operating properly, they proceed with diagnostic testing on the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Each manufacturer and model have its own separate test procedure and is to be followed at all times.
  • If everything checks out to be fine, inspect the ECM/PCM for faults. Faulty PCM needs replacement and reprogramming as necessary.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0083 code

Oftentimes the PCM sensor and circuit is blamed, and replaced, without checking the Intake Valve Control Solenoid and Circuit as well as neglecting the damaged wiring and connectors. Because there can be several causes for this code, a complete inspection should be carried out in order to avoid repairs that may be unnecessary and more expensive.

  • Following the wrong order or not following all steps of the diagnostic properly
  • Replacing the Intake Valve Control Solenoid without confirming that it is bad/damaged
