Error Code P0020: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P0020 - A Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit Bank 2
Is your engine stalling and facing problems when
cold starting? Are you experiencing decreased fuel economy as well as low power
from the car engines? All these must be the indication of OBC Code P0020 error.
OBD-II Code P0020 is defined as a
"A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/Open
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0020
A P0020 code refers to the VVT
(variable valve timing) or VCT (variable camshaft timing) components and the
car's PCM (powertrain control module) or ECM (engine control module). VVT is a
technology used in the engine to allow it to get greater power or efficiency at
different running points. That consists of an oil control valve (OCV), also
called a solenoid valve and other components.
Basically, the check engine light
and associated P0020 trouble code means that the voltage in the circuit has
fallen below a set limit for a specific amount of time (varies by
make/model/engine). Bank 2 is the side of the engine that doesn't contain
cylinder #1.
What causes this problem with the "A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit?
- The can be chances that the ECM has
commanded the OCV to less than 80% duty cycle and output is 100%
- The ECM has commanded the OCV up to
70% and output is less than 3%
- The OCV or wiring to the bank 1 exhaust camshaft can get shorted out
- The OCV may have an open circuit or
the wiring may be open

Code P0020? Your wish is our demand. Have a look at them below:
Common Symptoms
- The check engine light can start appearing
- The engine can have a hard start
condition if OCV is shorted
- There would be a decrease in the fuel mileage if the OCV is shorted or open
- The engine may run roughly, hesitate
or stall depending on if it has shorted or if it has an open OCV circuit
How To Correct P0020 "A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)
- Clear the fault codes, freeze the existing codes and test the system to verify
the code
- Check the wiring to the intake camshaft oil
control valve for bank 2 and replace/repair

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0020
- Monitor
crankshaft and camshaft positions using electromagnetic sensors
- A proper diagnosis should begin with making sure
that all engine timing indicators are properly aligned. After that, test belt
or chain deflection using manufacturer’s specifications
- VVT or VCT solenoids and circuitry is to be
tested if timing components prove to be properly aligned and in good working
order
- Check for electrical wiring and connectors as
they are more prone to fail than sensors, especially where oil or other
corrosive fluids are present
- An OBD-II scanner (or code reader), a digital
volt/ohmmeter, and an oscilloscope can be used to diagnose this error
- Repair or replace damaged, disconnected,
shorted, or corroded wiring, connectors, and components as necessary
- Always retest the system after repairs are
completed to ensure success. If all system wiring, connectors, and components
(Including fuses) appear to be in normal working order, connect the scanner (or
code reader) to the diagnostic connector and record all stored codes and freeze
frame data.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0020 Code
Do a visual inspection for common problems like
checking to see if electrical connectors are connected properly. Check engine
oil for the proper viscosity and as per configuration. Verify that failure
codes are present before attempting repairs using scan tools. Always follow the
manufacturer's procedures to prevent replacing good components or misdiagnosing
the trouble code.
