The serpentine belt is part of the engine that drives gadgets such as an alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioner compressor mounted on your car. This belt uses rotational energy from the crankshaft of the engine to turn those parts. Multi-vee, poly-v, or multi-rib belt is also known as the serpentine belt.
What is the purpose of Serpentine Belt?
The serpentine belt is intended to drive the accessories that are mounted in the engine. It operates the alternator, power steering unit, air conditioning, and water unit smoothly and effectively. The serpentine belt plays a major role in vehicle's electrical charging system and drives many mechanical components in the engine.
How Serpentine Belt Works?
The serpentine belt helps drive several in-engine accessories. In an automotive engine, the idler pulley and/or belt tensioner guide the belt to drive multiple peripheral devices. The belt is built with several grooves that attach to the attachment drive pulleys while a tensioner roller links the flat side of the belt. The belt travels around the alternator, the power steering pump, the air pump and the water pump to keep the engine running smoothly, continuously. To prevent slipping of the belt, the belt is slipped intact over pulleys and idler pulleys are used for pushing against the back of the belt.

The serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt situated at or alongside the engine front. The belt position can vary depending on the vehicle in question.
