5. Spark Cleaning Pocket

Between the center electrode and the insulator, a small pocket has been opened around the tip clearance. When there is carbon fouling or deposition, this part will discharge and burn off the carbon, restoring electrical resistance. This technology is patented by DENSO (Japan Patent No. 2727558).

6. Insulators for Racing

By using a new, strengthened insulator which was developed during numerous and repeated testing during racing trials, strength is improved by 20%.

7. Iridium Center Electrode - 0.4 mm Diameter 

At 0.4mm in diameter, the DENSO Iridium Power center electrode tip is the world’s smallest. It produces the hottest, most concentrated spark, while requiring the lowest voltage (5,000 less volts to fire than conventional spark plugs).

8. Silicone Oil Coating

During the start of the race, non-starting from carbon fouling and carbon deposits can be fatal. To stop this, the insulator has been coated with silicone. Using the water repellency of silicone, the insulator surface is isolated from moisture and carbon, preventing a decrease in resistance.

9. All-Platinum Ground Electrode

Compared to the nickel alloy used in conventional spark plugs, the high melting point of platinum will reduce such problems as ground electrode melting and wear. Also, the 0.8mm Platinum alloy is welded on and gapped without any bending, reducing residual stress and increasing durability.

10. Housing End Face Chamfer

To improve the tolerance to severe combustion conditions, the housing end-face chamfer has been enlarged. This camfer allows for slight inaccuracies in tuning. Also, this design facilitates better gas flow, which improves its self-cleaning performance to prevent carbon fouling.

Types
Two types of electronically controlled fuel injection pumps offer a completely different injection method from conventional fuel injection pumps.
Distributor (rotary) fuel injection pump
The electronic control system of the distributor type pump consists of various sensors, an ECU (electronic control unit) and an actuator. The sensors detect the running condition of the engine and send signals to the ECU. The actuator controls both the injection quantity and timing according to the signal it receives from the ECU, which calculates the optimum levels for the current running condition of the engine.
Common rail fuel injection pump (supply pump)
The common rail type pump has been developed to meet strict exhaust gas regulations in the 21st century. This system consists of a supply pump, common rail, electronically controlled injectors, various sensors to detect the running condition of the engine and a computer (ECU) to control these devices. The supply pump is driven by the engine and produces high-pressure fuel. An injector is mounted on each cylinder of the engine and the high-pressure fuel from the supply pump is distributed to each injector by the common rail Mechanically controlled injection pumps are divided into two categories:
In-line fuel injection pump
The in-line fuel injection pump has the same number of fuel pressure mechanisms (elements) as engine cylinders. This type of pump, including the governor, timer and feed pump on the pump's body, is mainly used for medium and large trucks and construction machinery. The pump body is equipped with fuel pressure/feed mechanisms and injection quantity control mechanisms driven by a camshaft. The elements in the pump body feed fuel to each engine cylinder according to the injection order.
Distributor injection pump
The distributor injection pump has only one fuel pressure mechanism, irrespective of the number of engine cylinders. Instead, it has a distributor designed to distribute the pressurized fuel to each cylinder according to the injection order. All the components, including the governor, timer and feed pump, are built into the pump housing. The small, light pump can operate at high speeds - making it ideal for small engines.
Function of Diesel Fuel Injection
The fuel injection system lies at the very heart of the diesel engine. By pressurizing and injecting the fuel, the system forces it into air that has been compressed to high pressure in the combustion chamber.
The diesel fuel injection system consists of:
* fuel injection pump - pressurizes fuel to high pressure
* high-pressure pipe - sends fuel to the injection nozzle
* injection nozzle - injects the fuel into the cylinder
* feed pump - sucks fuel from the fuel tank
* fuel filter - filtrates the fuel
Some types of fuel tanks also have a fuel sediment or at the bottom of the filter to separate water content from the fuel.
Functions of the system
The diesel fuel injection system has four main functions:
Feeding fuel
Pump elements such as the cylinder and plunger are built into the injection pump body. The fuel is compressed to high pressure when the cam lifts the plunger, and is then sent to the injector.
Adjusting fuel quantity
In diesel engines the intake of air is almost constant, irrespective of the rotating speed and load. If the injection quantity is changed with the engine speed and the injection timing is constant, the output and fuel consumption change. Since the engine output is almost proportional to the injection quantity, this is adjusted by the accelerator pedal.
Adjusting injection timing
Ignition delay is the period of time between the point when the fuel is injected, ignited and combusted and when maximum combustion pressure is reached. As this period of time is almost constant, irrespective of engine speed, a timer is used to adjust and change injection timing - enabling optimum combustion to be achieved.
Atomizing fuel
When fuel is pressurized by the injection pump and then atomized from the injection nozzle, it mixes thoroughly with air, thus improving ignition. The result is complete combustion.

Many manufacturer's catalogs identify the left and right side positioning; however, diagnostic tools refer to sensor locations by Bank and Sensor (e.g. Bank 1 Sensor 1). In the diagrams below, the longitudinal engine orientation illustrations depict rear-wheel drive. In cases of transverse engine (front wheel drive), the concepts are the same, however the mounting direction is at a 90 degree rotation left or right from longitudinal.
