In the vehicle’s coolant system, hoses and their hardware play an important role. Coolant hoses help coolant to circulate in different parts of the engine by connecting them with one another. Two openings are for inlet and outlet for hoses and one opening for the coolant cap. The diameter of the inlet hose is usually small, and the diameter of the outlet hose is always big.

Coolant hoses come in different shapes and sizes depending on the model of the engine. Usually, coolant hoses comprise hard plastic, rubber which is reinforced with fiber, and metal pipes. Hoses are of two types, the main hose is called the upper and lower radiator hoses, these hoses are about two inches in diameter and supply coolant between the engine and the radiator. Two additional hoses called the heater hoses to supply hot coolant from the engine to the heater core.

Coolant hoses and coolant tank can bear pressure and heat of the coolant without getting damaged or cracked. Parts such as the radiator, coolant hoses, coolant water pump, work together to cool the engine. In some vehicles, the coolant air bleeding plug is fitted on the coolant hose. If the coolant hose is damaged or it is leaking, the driver can also know the status of the coolant temperature on the cluster through coolant temperature gauge. Coolant hoses do not wear out easily and are not boiling from outside. They are tightened with hardware, like clamps or clips. Coolant heater hoses are connected to the heater core and are used to increase the air temperature inside the cabin for passengers.

The coolant circulates in the engine from the coolant tank. When the engine is cranked, the coolant is circulated from the coolant tank into the engine block through coolant hose or coolant pipes. The engine block has a water pump, which creates pressure to throw the coolant into the entire engine. When the temperature reaches between 80 to 90 degrees Celsius the thermostat in the engine opens and the hot coolant then moves from the engine to the radiator with the help of hoses. The radiator core has fins and is made up of aluminium. There is a fan attached to the radiator. The hot coolant activates the thermo switch (fitted usually on the radiator or coolant hose) due to which the fan gets operated, which helps the hot coolant in the radiator to cool. This cool coolant is then transferred to the coolant tank through coolant pipes and hoses. This process keeps on circulating and is known as the cooling system.

There can be another lot of problems including coolant leakage from hoses, which are clamped the car radiator, coolant tank, heater core and other parts where coolant hoses are connected. Step1

If the hoses are damaged or if there is a leakage near the coolant tank.You can change it by placing the vehicle on level ground.

Step 2

Ensure the vehicle’s engine is cool. Remove the coolant recovery tank cap slowly. Depending on the type of vehicle, most vehicles have drain plug fitted at the lower end of the radiator, loosen the drain plug and collect the coolant in a pan.

Step 3

Remove the coolant tank by removing the screws or nuts, lift the coolant tank, disconnect the coolant hoses attached to it by clip pliers from one end at removing the other end which could be attached with the engine or with the radiator.

Step 4

Reverse the process to fit a new coolant hose, the same way other coolant hoses can be replaced. While changing any coolant hoses, always remember to use new hardware.

Step 5

If there are any leakages, do not repair coolant tanks or coolant hoses. Replace them immediately.
