Buick Regal Thermostat, Gasket & Housing
About Thermostat, Gasket & Housing
The engine cooling system is an integration of multiple components that perform different tasks to ensure the engine is maintained at the right temperature. The thermostat is one such component of the engine cooling system. For the engine to run optimally, the engine temperature must remain between 195 - 220 degrees Fahrenheit. When we start the engine, the coolant temperature is the same as the ambient temperature. This temperature is too low for ideal engine performance. The engine needs to be isolated from the radiator so that the engine can reach operating temperature faster. The thermostat is located between the engine and the radiator and acts as a valve for coolant flow. Initially, during cold-starting, the thermostat of the vehicle is closed. There is absolutely no flow through the radiator and the coolant circulates within the engine. When the engine reaches the minimum operating temp, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow to the radiator and begins the cooling cycle. The minimum threshold temperature of a thermostat is about 80 to 100 degrees C. The thermostat is placed in a housing that is attached to the engine block and connects the upper radiator hose to the engine. The gasket is responsible for sealing the thermostat housing to the engine block.
The thermostat allows the engine to warm up quickly so it can reach the ideal operating temperature as quickly as possible. This is very important during winter months when the ambient temperature is very low. An engine running at the right temperature creates better power and is more fuel-efficient. It will also perform better without misfires, sputtering, and excess vibrations. A worn-out gasket can cause coolant leaks, which can cause several problems. The reason the gasket gets damaged is due to repeated expansion and contraction due to coolant temperature variations. A bad thermostat gasket can cause engine overheating due to an increase in coolant leaks.
