About Crank Position Sensor
The Crank Position Sensor is an important sensor in the engine management system that the engine would refuse to start without. The crankshaft position sensor, also known as crank angle sensor or engine speed sensor, measures the crankshaft position and the crankshaft rotational speed. This sensor transmits the accumulated information to the ECU on the basis of which the ECU determines the timing of the ignition and the injection of fuel, along with the data from other sensors.
What is the Purpose of Crank Position Sensor?
The sensor for the location of the crank defines the position of the crank in angle and the speed of the engine in rpm. These two are very important parameters for engine management to control systems such as timing for ignition and timing for fuel injection which have a direct impact on the power output of the vehicle.
How Crank Position Sensor Works?
If magnetism works on the principles the CPS works. Most modern sensors are called sensors with the hall effect. It generates electricity for magnetic field exposure. A toothed wheel causes disturbance in the magnetic field creating a constant and consistent on and off pattern that is translated by the ECU to the speed of the crankshaft. Even the older sensors function slightly differently on the same principle. The changes in the magnetic field induced on the crankshaft by the metal pins produce voltage, which is converted by the ECU into the engine rotational speed.
Where is Crank Position Sensor Located?
CPS location is subjective to the manufacturer of the vehicles. The CPS is most commonly placed on the timing belt cover.
