Outer tie rods provide a link between the steering knuckle and other steering components. On rack and pinion steering systems, outer tie rods are directly connected to an inner tie rod end. On steering box type systems, outer tie rod ends are connected to both the inner and outer pivot points of a linkage system, typically using adjusting sleeves. An outer tie rod is connected to an inner tie rod by an adjusting thread. This makes it possible to adjust the vehicle alignment to factory specifications and reduce tire wear. All Mevotech outer tie rods are manufactured with our X-Factor internal designs to provide the best possible service life for the part, and to reduce the effects of improper alignment on the vehicle's suspension system.
Types
* Wear Type - Outer Tie Rod Ends with Ball Joint Stud Ends or bushing ends. This type of Tie Rod End is prone to wear as it is designed to absorb the road conditions and reduce vibration feedback to the steering wheel.
* Non-Wear Type - Open taper Type. This type of Tie Rod End is designed to only be a connection point, there is no frictional wear point or no moving parts thus replacement is only due to corrosion or deterioration of mounting surfaces.
Purpose
* In Rack & Pinion Type Systems Outer Tie Rods acts as the link between the Knuckle and the Inner Tie Rod. The Outer Tie Rod is a major component in the vehicle directional path (left and the right turns) and at the same time helps thse suspension to absorb road conditions.
* In Steering Box Type Systems Outer Tie Rods are used as the primary link between all points of the system. With Connections to the Knuckle, Center Link(Track Rod) and Pitman Arm, it is not uncommon to find as many as six joints within the system.

* Metal design of internal components - Internal metal designs are widely used in the manufacture of Mevotech X Factor tie rod ends. These designs incorporate highly durable upper and lower metal bearings that surround the tie rod end stud and ball, and they include grease fittings to allow for grease and lubrication to be injected into the central area to prolong the life of the tie rod end.
