How To Change Drill Bits, Extractors & Accessories?

Power drills are quite versatile, and just by changing out the bits, you can simply drill through materials like plaster, pipe, wood and metal. We advise you to change the bits as per the requirements to protect the drill from getting damaged. Planning to change the drill bits? Once you have determined your needs, you can loosen and remove the bit easily. All you gotta do is simply following these instructions:

 

Step 1 - Replacing the bits on a keyless drill

 

Firstly, you should loosen the chuck. The chuck can be located on the end of the drill that performs the function of loosening and tightening in order to hold the bit. Get hold of the chuck using one hand while holding the handle of the drill with the other hand. Then the chuck should be twisted counterclockwise to loosen it. Otherwise you can also pull the trigger gently while holding on to the chuck.

 

Step 2 - Remove the bits

 

Once you loosen the chuck, the jaws will open that clamp onto the drill bit and it will start wobbling. On trying, you will easily be able to pull it out of the drill once the jaws that clamp it to the drill are loose too. It is essential to check the bit when removing it. If in case, it looks defective, you should discard it.

 

Step 3 - Then set the bit

 

You should try holding the bit using your thumb and index finger so that the smooth part of the bit (the shank) faces the jaws of the chuck. Then the bit should be inserted into the chuck and pulled back towards around a centimeter. Note that the fingers should be kept on the bit and the chuck as the bit isn’t secured and can fall easily.

 

Step 4 - The trigger should be squeezed

 

For that you should tighten the bit into the right position by giving the trigger a few short squeezes while your other hand should still be loosely holding the bit in place. You need to lightly hold the bit while squeezing in order to make sure that the bit has been installed properly.

 

Step 5 - The ratcheting mechanism should be engaged if required

 

Extra pressure should be applied to the shank of a drill bit, if your drill has a ratcheting mechanism. Click it into place. Firmly twist the ratcheting mechanism that is located next to the chuck in a clockwise direction for engaging it firmly. A chuck key should be used.

 

  • The chuck key should be inserted If your drill has a chuck key, then use it for loosening the chuck. The end of the drill key will appear to be like a cog with teeth. In order to insert the chuck key, line up the teeth so that they match the teeth on the chuck. Then insert the tip into one of the holes that you’ll find on the other side of the chuck.
  • A number of drills that have a chuck key also have a safe place for storage too. Generally, you can find the key chuck on the power drill rather than a cordless model.
  • Then turn the chuck key in a counterclockwise direction: As the key will turn, the jaws on the chuck will start opening. You should continue turning until the chuck opens enough so that you can easily slide the drill bit out.
  • Well, the jaws perform the function of holding the bit in place and are three or four pieces.

Step 6 - The bit should be removed

 

For this, you should pull the bit out using the thumb and index finger, if the chuck is loose. If in case, the chuck is opened wide and you suddenly turn the drill face down, it may fall off. Check the bit once it has been removed and check for damage. If it appears to be dull, replace it or if it is bent or exhibits signs of cracking, just discard it.

 

Step 7 - The bit should be inserted

 

You can do this when the jaw on the chuck are open wide. Be careful and hold the bit using your thumb and index finger so that the smooth part of the bit (the shank) faces the jaws of the chuck and then insert it. Ensure that you keep your fingers on the bit and the chuck as the bit isn't secured and can fall off.

 

Step 8 - The chuck should be tightened

 

When you are holding the bit in the right position, turn the chuck key in a clockwise direction to tighten the chuck's jaws with the other hand. Ensure that you tighten it firmly so that the bit is safe. And then remove the chuck key. The hand should be removed from the bit. Lastly, turn on the drill for testing it before use.
