Brake pads are positioned between the brake shoe (the part that clamps down, slows down the movement of the tires) and the brake drum, and are an important part of the brake system for your vehicle. Other elements of your car, such as the wheels, rotors, and calipers can easily start to wear away in the absence of working brake pads.

A brake pad is intended to delay or halt the movement of a machine or vehicle (car, truck, train, motorcycle, etc.). Unless the brakes were applied hydraulically, the calliper would then squeeze the two pads onto the rotating disc together to slow or stop the vehicle or computer.

The car's wheels will be connected to metal discs, or rotors, that rotate in a disc-breaking device along with the wheels. The master cylinder brake fluid, when you step on the brake, would produce hydraulic pressure on one or more brake calliper pistons which will force the pads against the rotor.
