Things To Know Before You Buy & Threading Tools

What Is Threading Tools?

Threading tools are metal cutting tools that are used to form a thread on a part. Threading tools include thread cutters, taps, and threading dies. Threading and tapping are the operations used to produce screw threads. Threading is an operation in which threads are produced on the outside of a component or we can call them as external threads using a die whereas, tapping is an operation in which internal threads are produced using a tool called tap.

Types Of Threading Tools

Tap and die set are common tools used in every workshop. They come in a variety of threads. A tap set contains three taps and are known as

  1. Taper Tap: A taper tap has quite a lot of taper to help it ease into cutting threads gradually. Typically, the first 8 to 10 threads are tapered.
  2. Plug Tap: Plug taps are in between bottoming and taper taps because they have 3-5 threads tapered, which is more than a bottoming tap and less than a taper tap.
  3. Bottoming Tap: A bottoming tap has almost no taper at the end because it is designed to thread all the way to the bottom of its reach. Only 1 to 1.5 threads will be tapered. Bottoming taps are useful for threading blind holes. It’s desirable to thread most of the hole with a taper tap first, and then finish the bottom of the hole with a bottoming tap.
  4. Threading dies: Threading dies are used to form or cut a male thread on the outside of rods or bars. Threading dies to provide precision in cutting and extend the life of a die by reducing wear.

Important Features Of Threading Tools

  • Internal or external threads can be repaired using threading tools.
  • Work becomes easy because of threading tools.
  • Threading tools are not a big machine but they are hand tools.
  • Parts need not be changed due to thread damage.
  • Threading tools are easy to use.

How Does Threading Tools Works?

The bolts and nuts are a versatile tool for any kind of fastening and are only limited by their threads as these are the only failure point in a bolt or nut. The pitch on the bolt threads can be worn down by many factors such as over-tightening, extreme loads, extreme heats, material’s structural rigidity, etc. and therefore are prone to breakdown in case of their failure, threading tools such as taps and dies are used to regain their damaged thread.

Frequent Problems With Threading Tools

  • The wrong pitch of thread can damage the part.
  • Using the wrong tap can damage the thread.
  • Holding the threading tool cross can damage the part.

Total Cost & Repair Times, Effort For Threading Tools

Rethreading damaged part, labor would cost about $15 to $20, depending on the type of vehicle and the part which has to be repaired. For rethreading, other related parts have to be removed first which may take about 20 to 40 minutes.

How To Use Threading Tools?

Using taps for threading any internal thread is very easy only if you have the proper pitch of tap that matches the internal thread. If the threads in a hole are not badly damaged or only a few threads near the top of the hole are damaged, take the taper tap first and attach a tap wrench or ratchet wrench to it. Apply a little cutting oil to the tap and start tapping slowly on the damaged thread. Slowly rotate the tap wrench in a clockwise direction after a few rotations reverse the direction. Apply a few drops of cutting oil and let the tap go fully inside the damaged thread. Remove the taper tap completely out. Blow some air in the hole of the damaged thread to remove the unwanted material. Take the second tap that is the plug tap and repeat the process as before after completing, take the third and final tap that is the bottom tap and repeat as before. After completing, clean the area properly and fit the bolt and tighten it fully.
