Many rear-wheel-drive automobiles with solid beam rear axles use straight roller bearing designs, often with multiple rows of bearings. In other situations, the axle tubes also serve as races for certain bearings . Since the radial loads put on them are distributed uniformly over a much wider point of contact, they are suitable for certain heavy-duty applications. The downside of straight roller bearings is that their design does not allow them to withstand large loads of thrust. Bearing assemblies with smaller diameter straight roller bearings are frequently found in confined quarters such as gearboxes. Tapered bearings are often most widely found in the wheel bearing assemblies placed within wheel hubs. The rollers seem to have a cylindrical shape, but they're all tapered to one side. They are put inside bearing assemblies that are cone-shaped because the structure allows this form to withstand heavy quantities of radial strain, thrust loads, and hard shocks.
