Learn All About EVAP System

What Is EVAP System?

Willing to know the functions of an EVAP system? The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system performs the function of sealing the fuel system of the vehicle from preventing the fuel vapors from the fuel tank and fuel system from entering the atmosphere. It is essential to do so as the fuel vapors have a number of hydrocarbons which lead to formation of smog after reacting with air and sunlight. A vehicle has the tendency of polluting the atmosphere 24 hours a day, if you leave the fuel system open as gasoline evaporates quickly. The major components in the EVAP system includes the fuel tank, gas cap, liquid-vapor separator, EVAP canister, vent control valve, purge valve/sensor, vent hoses, fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel level sensor.

How Do Evap System Work?

  • The fuel added to cars is made up of more than 150 chemicals that includes benzene, toluene and lead (sometimes). Note that these ingredients often lead to dizziness, breathing issues and headaches when they are inhaled. Longer contact with gasoline fumes can also lead to death. So, for such reasons, automakers are required to equip systems on their vehicles that’ll help in evaporation of the gasoline present. These EVAP systems are designed in a manner that they can both store and eliminate fuel vapours before they are released into the atmosphere.
  • Generally, this system contains a small canister full of charcoal, valves, hoses, vents in the fuel lines and a sealed fuel tank cap. Inside the gas tank, when the fuel evaporates, the extra vapours are transferred to the charcoal canister. They are stored there till the time they can be moved back safely to the engine for burning with normal air-fuel mixture.
  • After all this, the valve creates a vacuum that sucks the vapours into the engine. For better combustion, fresh air is also taken in through the vents and valves for mixing. Either mechanically or through the engine’s computer, these systems can be controlled. The valves are updated by the computer about when to purge the canister of vapors when the car is in motion. In case, the canister fails to purge or functions under unfavourable conditions, the emissions or engine performance of the vehicle are likely to fail. Perform immediate replacements in such cases.

Frequent Problems With Evap System

The charcoal canister is an essential unit. This canister usually has a big surface area that aids greatly in storing vapors from the fuel. Diminished power, fuel odor, increased pinging, poor fuel economy, problems with the purge valve and flooding are some common problems you might face if there is a problem in the EVAP system. The canister purge valve is an essential unit in the (EVAP) system. At times, when the engine is running at a normal speed, the EVAP system enables these vapours to be released into the engine. The canister purge valve controls the flow of these vapours. This valve is electrically operated and is also known as a solenoid. A stuck valve can be very problematic. These are the following symptoms that indicate a problem with the EVAP system:

  1. An Illuminated Check Engine Light - The check engine light illuminates when the car’s computer detects abnormally high or low purging from the valve.
  2. When the Purge Valve Is Stuck Closed - When the canister purge valve fails to open as per the requirements, the gas mileage gets adversely affected. This might lead to the vapours being vented directly into the atmosphere. Also, this hampers the overall functioning too.
  3. When the Purge Valve Is Stuck Open - When the canister purge valve is left stuck open, it leads to vacuum leakages that adversely affect the engine causing the air to enter the engine in quantities that are not acceptable by the computer. This further leads to a change in the car’s air to fuel ratio, rough idling and difficulty in starting. All of this together can lead to a failure in the canister valve. A faulty fuel mixture caused due to this will also damage the spark plugs. Replace the filters present in the charcoal canister frequently as per the requirements.

Total System Costs & Repair Times, Effort Of Evap System

There are a lot of factors which should be considered when you are thinking of replacing EVAP system. First you have to decide that if you require some related parts of EVAP system or a whole EVAP system. Then after that the next step is to decide what type of make as well as type of EVAP system you are actually dealing with and then from where will you get a brand new one. Just keep in mind that a brand new EVAP system which would come from a warehouse would cost much more than the one you will get in a junkyard. After that the next point which should be considered is that from where you are going to get it replaced and how quickly it needs to be done. The prices for the replacement of the EVAP system are estimated between $200 to $500. The labour costs around $35 to $140 while the parts are priced between $150 to $440.
