Chevrolet Equinox Cooling & Heating
About Cooling & Heating
Cooling and heating both can be achieved in a single system, known as the air conditioning system of the car. This system is capable of maintaining optimal vehicle cabin temperatures through various sensors and switches. Thus, air conditioning is the process of removing heat and moisture from the vehicle interior to improve comfort and ride quality. This system can be used in both domestic and commercial environments and is commonly used to achieve a more comfortable interior environment for drivers and other occupants inside the vehicle. The air conditioning system used in modern cars is equipped with different switches and sensors. A/c Relays, sensors, and switches are some of the smallest, but most vital parts of the A/c system chain. Some of these parts include fan relay, blower motor relay, ambient air sensors, and A/c and heat control switch. A lot of hard work and engineering goes into the production of these intricate systems, and any direct or indirect malfunction can severely affect the overall performance of the system. If the ambient air temperature sensor is malfunctioning, the driver and the A/c control module will never know about the temperatures outside. The same goes for other sensors like the interior air sensor and humidity sensors. Similarly, if a relay in relation to any part starts to malfunction, be it a blower motor, fan, etc., goes bad, that part will not function. If the A/c and heat control switch become faulty, the HVAC system may act weird or not function at all. Replacing the bigger and more expensive parts can be meaningless and time-consuming if you have a faulty relay, sensor, or switch that is preventing the proper operation of that specific part, which should be replaced first. There are several components present in the A/c system, and one bad part can start a chain reaction that might cripple the entire system.
Some switches and sensors used in the cooling and heating system of a vehicle are as follows: Thermostat Sensor: It is located near the evaporator coil, inside the AC unit. When the air moves past the sensor and coil it reads the temperature and compares it to the desired temperature. The sensor then activates the compressor. Electronic Control: Electronic control motors are used for the fine adjustment and movement of distribution doors. These motors operate the air distribution door and temperature blend door, as these doors have to be moved proportionally. Vehicle Speed Sensor: Vehicle speed is an important factor for calculating the cooling rate of the interior because of increased natural airflow. Thus, an increment in the vehicle's speed will cause the control module to decrease the speed of the blower. Humidity Sensor: Humidity sensors determine relative air humidity using capacitive measurement technology. Evaporator Sensor: An evaporator sensor is used on a system that uses electronic control as opposed to electrical control. These systems use the temperature sensor to feed a voltage reading to a control module, which is programmed to use the data and compare it to the data stored in its memory. Pressure Sensors: The pressure sensor contains two metal-plated ceramic discs mounted in proximity. The disc located closest to the pressure connection is thinner and bends when subjected to pressure. Therefore, the capacitance between the metal plating of the discs gets changed depending on the pressure. A circuit integrated into the sensor converts the capacitance to an analog voltage. Angle Sensors (potentiometer): An angle sensor measures the angular rotation of a component, e.g. air distributor door or throttle valve. Temperature Sensing Circuit: The temperature sensing circuit is used to sense cabin temperature; the temperature of the air inside the vehicle. This is measured by an air temperature sensor and monitored by an onboard computer. Sun Load Sensor: It can be a photoelectric diode that uses a photovoltaic effect and measures sun intensity. The sensor is located above the instrument panel near the windshield. High-Pressure Switch: A closed pressure switch that de-energizes the compressor if excessive high pressure exists within the A/c system. The switch is generally located on the top side of the system. Low-Pressure Switch: This switch reacts to the pressure in the low side (suction side) of the system, generally the accumulator, and disengages the compressor clutch if the pressure drops. Air Quality Sensor: If the vehicle is passing through a poor air quality index area, the air intake process will stop and the system will switch to recirculation mode. This stops the outside air from entering the passenger compartment and from becoming contaminated. An Air Quality Sensor is present in the main air inlet duct of the HVAC.
