A distributor is an electric and mechanical device used in the ignition system of older spark ignition engines. The distributor's main function is to route electricity from the ignition coil to each spark plug at the correct time.

What happens when a distributor fails?

A faulty engine distributor won't spark, which will either prevent the engine from starting or cause it a running engine to fail.

Can a car run without a distributor?

If the distributor is bad, the engine may not get the spark it needs. As a result, the engine will crank, but it will not start or run.
