Things You Should Know About Auto Parking Lamps & Lights

What Is Auto Parking Lamps & Lights?

The set of lights that is present on the outside of the headlight in the front portion of the car is known as "parking lights". These parking lights that are present on the front helps the driver to look at the vehicle and analyse its width. The second set of parking lights is always present on the rear portion of the car.

Where Is Auto Parking Lamps & Lights Located?

You can always find the parking lights on the front and rear portion of the vehicle. They are usually white or amber coloured in the front and red on the back. These lights have to be visible for about 500 ft. Driving with the parking lights on is never legal as they are only meant to be used during parking.

Types Of Auto Parking Lamps & Lights

The colour of these parking lights is usually orange or colour so that it will be easy to distinguish between the white headlights and red brake lights. You can also find the parking lights to be typically bright and clear lights in other parts of the world.

How Do Auto Parking Lamps & Lights Work?

The red lights will get automatically turned on in the rear light clusters, along with the lights, so that it illuminates the rear number plate. This happens when they are activated. If the car is static with the sidelights turned on, then these lights act as the parking lights of your vehicle. These codes have to be displayed when the vehicle is parked on the road or a lay-by on a road where the speed limit is greater than 30 mph as per the highway code.

You can display the parking lights on one side of the vehicle in a few models. This side is the one that is exposed to road traffic. If fixed, this feature can usually be selected using the indicator stalk; where you can set the indicators for the relevant side of the car and it will activate the parking lights when the key is withdrawn from the ignition. In a few models, this feature can be selected through a rotary side light switch, and it has positions for the parking lights on either side.

How to Switch On Your Car's Auto Parking Lamps & Lights?

In modern vehicles, the switch that is used to turn on and off the various lights like turning indicators, glaring headlights, city lights, parking lights, and fog lamps are all present on a common handle/knob-like device.

  • You can find this easily on the side of the steering wheel that is present inside the car. Usually when you turn the knob to the first set, it will switch on the parking lights, and similarly, the second setting will turn on the car's headlights.
  • Today, the parking lights have become irrelevant, owing to broader and sufficiently lit roads. Nowadays, if someone parks or stops at the side of the road, the hazard indicator of the vehicle is used instead of the parking lights. Despite the fact that the use of parking lights is a low-battery-consuming alternative.
  • These parking lights can be highly helpful to drivers who need only a minimal amount of light so that they can park in their own private garage or parking space. These people are not looking to draw attention to themselves by blaring the bright headlamps.
  • These lights are also helpful in low-light driving, such as during twilight hours. Even today they double up as daylight lamps.

Purpose Of Auto Parking Lamps & Lights

Parking lamps & lights serve several purposes:

  • They help you to see your surroundings, give others a way to see you, and gives an indication for other drivers of your future actions.
  • They act as a backup light during emergencies. In case the headlight burns out, the parking light will show some light on the same side of the car.
  • Also, in one such situation, the glow that is created by the parking lights around the car will make it more obvious that the vehicle is an automobile and not a motorcycle with only one standard headlight.
  • Parking lights are produced on the same wiring system such as the headlights and are used concurrently with them as an additional source of illuminating a vehicle. The main purpose of the parking light is to make cars more visible from the side.
