Everything About Car HID Lights You Need To Know

What is a Car HID Lights?

The high-intensity discharge lamps (HID lamps) would be a type of electrical gas-discharge lamp which would provide light by means of an electric arc which would be between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube. This tube would be filled with noble gas and would many times contain suitable metal or metal salts. This noble gas would enable the arc's initial strike. Now once the arc would be started, it would heat up and then evaporates the metallic admixture. Its presence in the arc plasma would greatly increase the intensity of visible light which would be produced by the arc for a given power input, as the metals would have many emission spectral lines in the visible part of the spectrum. The high-intensity discharge lamps would be a type of arc lamp.

The brand new high-intensity discharge lamps would make a more visible light per unit of electric power which would be consumed than fluorescent and incandescent lamps, since a greater proportion of their radiation would be visible in light in contrast to infrared. However, the lumen output of HID lighting would be able to deteriorate by up to 70% over 10,000 burning hours.

There are a lot of latest automobiles which use HID bulbs for the main lighting systems, there can be some applications which are now moving from HID bulbs to LED and laser technology. But, this HID technology is not new and was first demonstrated by Francis Hauksbee in 1705.

Types of Car HID Lights

Are you searching for the different types of HID lights? Then don’t worry! All you have to do is to have a look below and then all your doubts regarding its types would be cleared.

There are a lot of types of high intensity discharge lamps, all of which would differ by compounds used to produce the light – mercury, sodium, metal halide or mixture of few. As per these compounds, 3 of the most common HID light types are:

  • Mercury vapour lamps;
  • High pressure sodium vapour lamps;
  • Metal halide lamps.

Important Features of Car HID Lights

Do you want to know the essential features of HID lights? Then you have arrived at the right place. Have a look below to know the important features of HID lights:

  • There are a lot of advantages of having the HID lamps. Spectrum visibility is offered by the xenon headlights. This particular style of headlights was first developed in 1991 and has since then it has gained a lot of popularity because of its benefits. Now during that time, the headlights were more expensive than individuals were willing to pay for the lamps. But now these days, the cost has plummeted making them far more affordable and within everyone’s reach.
  • One of the main benefits of Xenon headlights is that long lasting life is offered by them than the typical lamps. They would last three times longer than halogen bulbs. It would surely save the money of the driver.
  • One another advantage which is offered by them is that they provide lower energy usage. These headlights use 25-30 percent less energy than halogen bulbs. It would be much easier on the electrical system and the battery, which would also save the money of the car driver.
  • The Xenon headlights are also very attractive than typical headlights it one of the benefits. The light which is provided by these types of headlights would be cleaner and at the same time would provide a classy look to any luxury vehicle. It would be considered to be cost efficient and an aesthetic upgrade for your automobile. These lights are functional as well as very elegant.

How Do Car HID Lights Work?

Are you searching how do the HID lights actually work? Then all you have to do is to have a look below and then you will be able to understand everything.

  • As with halogen lights, xenon lights are named after the gas within that specific bulb type. Meanwhile, HID would be short for high-intensity discharge, which is how xenon lights function. Basically, HID headlights beam a light-emitting plasma which would form through a combination of xenon gas and vaporized salt, which would be activated on an arc by a ballast in the range of 30,000 V and would be sustained in the voltage range of 80 to 100 V.
  • The halogen headlights, by contrast, would be incandescent, so they are lit with heat – which would happen to be the bulb’s main weakness. There is a filament in light which would be electrified with heat, while halogen gas safeguards the filament and would make the bulb last reasonably long. It would be a very simple process and it would account for the low-cost pricing and automotive ubiquity of halogen bulbs. Even though the halogen bulbs would have long been an industry standard, they would consume wasteful amounts of energy and generate undue heat so that they can stay activated. As such, halogen bulbs would be an inefficient lighting option.
  • Because of the limitations and wastefulness of halogen lights, the automobile manufacturers would be increasingly switching to HID headlights, which would be more efficient and overall better for night time driving conditions.

Purpose of Car HID Lights

The main purpose of the HID headlights would be to create a wider light beam pattern and would then illuminate the area at the side of vehicle better and would be generally three times brighter than the halogen ones, which would allow the drivers who use them to drive more safely.

How to Change Car HID Lights?

Do you want to change your HID lights on your own? Then have a look at the steps of changing the HID lights below:

The high-intensity discharge, or HID, headlight would provide a stronger beam of light which would be conventional headlight but can burn out just like any other headlight. Now when this would happen, then it should be restored as soon as possible so that driving conditions or a costly traffic ticket can be avoided. The replacement of an HID headlight would be similar to that of a standard bulb except for having to deal with a ballast.

Step 1

First of all you should park the automobile on level ground. Then engine should then be turned off and then allow the vehicle to sit for 10 minutes to allow the headlight bulb to cool.

Step 2

The hood should then be opened up and then you should check the ea behind the burned-out headlight to decide how you would access the HID bulb. There are some automobiles which would have a plastic or rubber access panel which has to be removed, others would have an open access.

Step 3

The electrical wiring harness should then be unplugged from the current HID ballast. The wire which runs from the ballast to the light socket should then be unplugged.

Step 4

The socket should then be removed and then undo retaining clips which would hold the HID bulb in place. The new HID bulb should then be inserted and then secure it in place.

Step 5

The socket in the light assembly should then be replaced. The wire should then be plugged from the ballast into the socket and the wiring harness into the ballast. The access panels should then be replaced and then carefully close the car hood.
