What Is Car Frame?

Know what a car frame is? A vehicle frame is one of the most essential parts of the car. Additionally, it is a part of the chassis. The frame acts as a skeletal set up for the vehicle and all other motor vehicle elements are connected to the frame in some way or the other. The chassis is also attached to the frame. The engineering of almost all vehicles is done in such a way so as to include a frame. Some manufacturers, however, in an attempt to decrease the amount of space and to reduce the number of parts which are required to make a frame and a chassis, decided to modify the ideal structure and replace it with a unibody design.

Types of Car Frame

Here we have listed the various types of car frame only for our customers:

1. Ladder frame

  • The ladder type frame is inclusive of two C section side members with welded-in tubular cross members.
  • the ladder frame got its name because of its structure which bears resemblance to a ladder with two side rails and numerous cross beams.
  • In the beginning the ladder frame was the most popular frame for almost all vehicles but gradually grew outdated because of the invention of other types of frames.

2. Cruciform frame

  • The cruciform frame is engineered in a way that two straight beams are positioned perpendicular to each other.
  • The cruciform frame is better suited than ladder frame as it also overcomes the issue of weak torsional firmness.
  • It should be noted that the torsional loads get cancelled here amidst the cross members and the side frame that bears the bending weight.

3. Space frame

  • The cruciform frames as well as the ladder frames are basically two-dimensional or their depth is generally very less as compared to their length or breadth.
  • A great way to increase a frame’s bending strength and firmness is to add depth to the frame (that is, truss type bridges).
  • Specialist cars such as sports racing cars have three-dimensional space frames installed in them.
  • G.R.P. bodies can use this type of vehicle structure for low volume production.

4. Integral structures

  • Did you know that the modern largely-produced passenger cars are specially designed and produced with sheet steel pressings spot welded together to form an integral structure? It is a structure where the auto parts provide both structural and other functions.
  • The space frame that is the depth of the structure helps in enhancing the stiffness and in the integral structure the whole side frame along with its depth and roof help greatly in contributing to the vehicle bending and torsional stiffness.

Symptoms of Bad Car Frame

Here we have listed all the symptoms that should be noted as a warning sign for a bad car frame:

  1. Frame is visibly damaged or dented - The most basic inspection of the car frame is a visual check for any signs of damage to the frame, for example, any signs of rust, corrosion, dents in the frame or the exterior. It is also important to check the bottom of the frame for any problems or outward damage.
  2. The car alignment is off - If the car is leaning or pulling into one direction after an accident, it could be an indication that the frame is bent. This issue may also be due to an alignment issue, but if that has been checked and the problem continues, the frame might be the root of this problem.
  3. Car makes unusual noises - Bent or even slightly damaged car frames become the cause of unusual sounds in the car, for example, squeaking, creaking from some part of the car, whether the front or back or side. If these noises are noticed, the frame should be checked by an auto body shop immediately.
  4. You will notice an uneven shock and suspension wear - If the shocks and suspensions are wearing out at different rates, it might be an indication that the frame is bent. This is because the sides where extra weight is transferred due to the bent frame will wear out considerably more. Therefore, if any signs of uneven wear in shock and suspension components is noticed, the frame should be inspected thoroughly.
  5. Tire wear is not uniform - A bent frame can also impact the suspension and alignment, which in turn can affect the tire wear. If the tire wear in uneven, even after maintaining the tire rotations, it could be due to a bent frame.
  6. Parts don’t fit properly - A frame is the structural base of the vehicle and all other parts are also attached to the frame. The windows, doors, bolts and mounts may show signs of damage as a bent frame may leave too little or too much space for them.
  7. Wheels don’t track correctly - When a vehicle is being driven in a straight line, it should not be angled to another side. If this is noticed, and the vehicle is moving diagonally even when it is being driven straight, this may be an indication that the frame is bent. This is called crab waking in dog walking of the vehicle in common language.

What Are the Functions of Car Frame?

The frame is the skeleton of the vehicle and in generic terms is known as the chassis. The structure of a frame determines what will be the condition of the car and where the maximum damage will be at the event of an accident. It also sets the performance level of the car when it comes to handling, weight, ratio of power to weight, etc. The chassis and the frame were separate parts in the olden times. However, in modern engineering, the body is attached to the chassis. This attachment can also be deemed as a marriage. The body frame and chassis are combined to make one part. This is very advantageous as it reduces cost, and minimize the weight as well as to increase the stability of the vehicle. The first step after the manufacture of chassis and frame is sending them for painting and rust prevention coating. Next, all parts of the car including door panels, engine, hood etc. are sent to be assembled on the assembly line. Some vehicles are engineered in a way where the engine is a part of the chassis. This ensures that the engine also acts like a stress membrane.

What Is the Difference Between Chassis and Frame?

  1. Frame - A frame constitutes the basic structure of the chassis of a motor vehicle. All the components of the vehicle are connected to the frame, this is why the design is also called body-on-frame construction. Upto 1920, almost all motor vehicles had frames. The exceptions were only cars which were based on motorcycles. After that period, a change came about in the vehicle structure and nearly all cars were designed with unit-body construction. However, the buses and trucks use frames even today.
  2. Chassis - The chassis acts as a skeletal structure for the vehicle, and is one of the most significant parts of the vehicle. The chassis is also essential because the mechanical parts including engine, tires, axle assemblies, brakes, steering etc. are affixed. The chassis is the main support system of the automobile as it imparts strength and flexibility to the vehicle. Different auto parts are bound together with the help of tie bars, which are fasteners. The chassis is rightly said to be the backbone of any vehicle.

What is Car Frame Advantage And Disadvantage?

  • Do you know that prior to the 1960’s the cars and trucks were only produced using body-on-frame process? Meaning that the vehicle’s structural frame was completely separate from the body. So, in cases where the frame got damaged, there were chances of the vehicle being deemed as non-repairable. It's only after the 1960’s with Chevrolet releasing the Corsair, the first ever unitized frame vehicle was produced. Also, Ford’s mass-producing unitized frame vehicles came into existence in the same decade.
  • Note that a unitized frame or unit-body vehicle was designed in a way from the ground up in order to have the main cabin of the vehicle act as the main structure. You could find metal folded and welded to the front and back of the cabin. Also, these became frame rails that further strengthened and enhanced the structural integrity of numerous cars on the road.
  • Using the “crush zones” these rails were designed. It helped absorb the kinetic energy that travelled through a vehicle during an accident.
  • Well, this designer structure served two causes namely to protect the cabin’s occupants and to reduce the structural destruction to a vehicle. The crush zones are designed in a manner so that they can be mended using a structural alignment machine and a number of repair methods depending on the type of the material with which they are composed.
  • A separate sub-frame is located in the vehicle that is a smaller frame structure located in the front of the vehicle and at times also in the rear that holds the motor and suspension parts. This frame, along with the motor mounts helps in distributing the vibrations from the running engine and drive-train away from the cabin. This helps in creating a no disturbance zone for the occupants.
  • Nowadays, almost all cars, all medium sized and small SUVs on the road are unit-body vehicles while a number of pickup trucks are still manufactured using the body-on-frame method. So, the next time, your technician tells you the estimate and it's time to repair the frame, know that the vehicle will just be put on structural alignment machine. We advise you to use correct methods as dictated by the manufacturer or the industry standards in order to bring back the unit-body back to the factory specifications.

Frame Of Car Body Structure Definitions

The most important element of any car is its body structure. It performs the primary functions of connecting all the elements and auto-parts of the vehicle, the drive train is placed in the car body, and it also houses and protects the driver as well as passengers and the cargo. It is necessary to set certain parameters for the rigidity of the body structure as it has to support considerably heavy weights and securely bind together all the elements. The car body should be made in such a way so as to minimize any casualties in case of accidents, and it must be able to resist and lessen the effect of the crash for the safety of its passengers. A lighter car body is also preferable as it would help to manage the fuel economy of the vehicle. Many new designs have been created and all of them have their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Material of car Frame

Originally, the steel car bodies were produced using stamped sheet parts, which were joined by using the resistance spot welding. With the development of technology, hydroforming technology and the laser beam welding techniques were introduced. The market introduction of new high and ultra-high strength steel grades was a breakthrough in technology and brought about improvement in the stiffness and the crash worthiness and succeeded in significantly reducing the weight of the steel car bodies at low or negligible costs. Also, the laser welded, continuous joints help greatly in strengthening the rigidity of the monocoque body structure and structural parts and subframes that are composed from thin, hydroformed steel tubes. These further create room for improvements in the body strength and stiffness. Same design and manufacturing concepts are put to use for steel body structures can be further applied to realize an all-aluminum car body. Although these basic substitution leads are not always the low-cost solutions. We advise you to adopt a thoroughly revised approach for considering the total system that includes the construction material, appropriate design concepts and applicable fabrication methods. It is both technically and economically, that the aluminum car body concepts are the result of aluminum-oriented design concepts and are aptly adapted fabrication technologies. Aluminum offers a great variety of design options with its different product forms that include sheets, extrusions and castings etc. so it can be rightly said that the aluminum over steel in the body structure allows a significant weight reduction.
