You Should Know This About Your Brake Hydraulics

What Is Front Brake Hydraulics?

The brake-pedal force is transmitted by the hydraulic braking system to the wheel brakes through pressurized fluid. The fluid pressure would be converted into the useful work of braking at the wheels. The brake pedal would relay the foot effort of the driver to the master-cylinder piston, which compresses the brake fluid. The pressure of the fluid would be equally transferred throughout the fluid to the front disc-caliper pistons as well as to the rear wheel-cylinder pistons. There should be a separate mechanical parking brake which should be incorporated with at least two wheels, as per the rules. The car driver would be allowed to stop the automobile if there are some defects in the hydraulic brake system due to this provision.

Where Is Front Brake Hydraulics Located?

When the brake pedal would be pressed in the hydraulic brake system, then a force would be exerted on the piston by the pushrod in the master cylinder. This would cause the fluid to flow into a pressure chamber from the brake fluid reservoir through a compensating port.

Important Features Of Front Brake Hydraulics

Here are some essential features of the Front Brake Hydraulics:

  • There should be equal braking effort to all the four wheels
  • Keep in mind that there should be less rate of wear
  • There should be force multiplication (or divisions) very easily just by changing the size of one piston and cylinder relative to other

How Does Front Brake Hydraulics Works?

Drum Hydraulic Brake

Now when the car driver would apply the brakes in a vehicle which is equipped with drum type hydraulic brakes, then the following process would start taking place:

  • Just because of the movement or actuation of brake pedal, the connecting rod which is attached in between pedal as well as the piston of a master cylinder would move, which in turn would push the master cylinder’s piston inside the master cylinder just like a medical syringe.
  • Now because of this movement of the piston which is inside the master cylinder the compression of brake fluid inside the master cylinder would take place, which would provide the conversion of mechanical energy into hydraulic pressure.
  • Then the brake fluid which is highly compressed from the master cylinder would start moving inside the brake and then the transfer of this hydraulic pressure from master cylinder to the brake drum would start taking place.
  • When the brake fluid would start entering the wheel cylinder or drum cylinder because of its high pressure, then the movement in the cylinder piston would start taking place, which would then expand the stationary brake shoes which are attached to it.
  • Because of the expansion of the brake shoes, there would be a frictional contact between brake shoes and drum lining. It would then convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle into heat energy and then finally the braking would start occurring.

Single Acting Drum Type Braking

This type of brake system works exactly in the same manner as the one which is mentioned above. Now in this type of braking single wheel or a single pair of wheels would get the braking force.

Double Acting Drum Type Braking

Now in the double acting hydraulic brake, the high-pressure brake fluid would be distributed in 2 directions i.e. both the wheels in bikes and all wheels in cars. This is because of the utilization of the tandem master cylinder.

Disc Hydraulic Brakes

When the car driver would apply brake in an automobile which is equipped with disc type hydraulic brakes then it processes which is involved is similar as drum hydraulic bakes up to when the high-pressure brake fluid would start entering the brake lines but differ a bit after that:

  • The high-pressure brake fluid would start entering the disc caliper cylinder from the brake lines of a disc brake system.
  • A movement in the caliper cylinder’s piston would be caused by the high-pressure brake fluid which in turn would cause the movement of the brake pad which is attached to the piston inside the caliper.
  • Because of the movement of brake pad, the clamping of the rotating disc rotor would start taking place and because of this frictional contact between brake pads and the rotating disc rotor, there would be a conversion of automobile’s kinetic energy into heat energy which would in turn stop or de accelerate the automobile.

Single Acting Disc Type Braking

The single acting disc type hydraulic braking works exactly in the same manner as the one which is mentioned above. Now in this type of braking single wheel or a single pair of wheels would get the braking force.

Double Acting Disc Type Braking

Now in the double acting disc type hydraulic brake, the high-pressure brake fluid would be distributed in 2 directions i.e. both the wheels in bikes and all wheels in cars. This is because of the utilization of the tandem master cylinder.

Frequent Problems with Front Brake Hydraulics

There can be a lot of causes of the front brake hydraulics failure in automobiles. Disc brakes with hydraulic system are used by the conventional passenger car, so the issues with those components can cause failure in the brake. The most common cause due to which a failure in the hydraulic system can be caused is the air which gets trapped in the hydraulic pipe line for the brake.
